4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, October 15. 197s Shaw's__ News Mr. Jerry nouumbon, Unver- sity of Waterloo, spent Thanksgiving weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Robinson and was pleased to see that his Mother is progressing well after ber recent surgery. We wish.her continued good health. Mr. Lloyd Ayre is spending this week in Halifax, N.S. while attending the Atlantic Winter Fair. Lloyd has the honour of being the official judge for the sheep classes. Miss Karen Ball, Centennial College. spent the holiday weekend with ber parents Mr. and Mrs. Leland Ball and attended St. Paul's Thanks- giving service where the display of fruits and vegeta- bles representing a bountiful harvest was indeed excellent. Mr. and Mrs. Martin Van Dyk visited last Weekend in Ottawa as guests of their son Martin and his wife. Martin Jr., bíaving just recently received his diploma in Horti- culture, is currently employed by a large Landscaping and Nurpery firm in Ottawa. He plans to continue his education in this profession. Mr. Jim Robinson spent last weekend at the Fali Board meeting of the Jaycees in Oakville. We were pleased to be along with Gertrude and Walter Hendrikx and Anne Simpson who provided rides for the Library Assistants from Hobbs' School, last Thursday on their regular visit to the McMichael Gallery at Klein- burg. Unfortunately, the marve- lous scenery of the McMichael Conservation Area at the edge of the Humber Valley Ravine could not be appreciated to the fullest extent because of the day's very cloudy and windy weather. But the interior of this outstanding piece of Ontario architecture with its hand-hewn timbers and native stone, is so massive and unusual that its visitors can- not fail to be impressed. We were very privileged to have a personal visit with a Canadian artist Mack Sloan, who is presently showing his work in one of the thirty galleries there. His collection, which mainly combines the natural scenic beauty of Canada with his use of the mixed media technique pro- duces a great variety in his delightful paintings. His description of one of his abstract pictures entitled Alice in Wonderland clearly demonstrates the amount of detail involved in such work and suddenly we were all aware of tbe real human figures there which had com- pletely eluded our view pre- viously. This gallery wbicb is open throughout the year is free of charge to visitors and is really wortb several visits especially when we consider as well, that this is government spending at its best. Thanksgiving visitors at the Ross Lane's included Mr. and Mrs. James Lane and Honour, Richmond Hill, Mr. and Mrs. Phil Eldridge, New- market, Wesley and Stanley Lane. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Wood and Stephen attended the Weekes-Hannah wedding in Coldsprings on Saturday even- ing. We called at the Prices' Fruit and Vegetable Stand on Hwy. No. 2 this past weekend and were so impressed with the tremendous quantity and variety of produce available there. In chatting with Gail and Phyllis we discovered that this fine roadside market started really by accident some thir- teen years ago. It seems that such a bountiful supply of fruit and vegetables resulted from the use of a certain kind of fertilizer and insecticide that the Prices, who have resided in this area for some forty years, decided to place their excess produce on their drive- way in case passers-by were interested in using up tbeir surplus. Tbe response was so good that tbe wbole family decided to get in on tbe act and really did some planning regarding times of planting and .barvest so tbeir corn, turnips, etc. would be ready at limes whicb coincide with,. current demand. Tbe Guthries and Prices agree tbat producing good fruits and vegetables requires a lot of bard work but, besides tbe monetary rewards tbey do meet so many interesting people wbo stop to buy and tben incidentally pick up information about tbis area. So in its way this family is really acting as good will ambassadors for tbis part of tbe Durham Region. We bope tbis wortby enter- prise will continue for manîy more years and we especially like to mention tbe work of Mrs. Stella Price as she continues to be active with tbe gardens in the years wben many ladies ber age would be content to retire. Did you know that five unlicensed automobile drivers were injured in collisions in Ontario in 1973? There were probably a few more unli- cenced drivers injured than that, speculates the Ontario Safety League, but these were all under five-years of age. Official records list them as the driver because they were behind the wheel at the time of collision. Parents are warned never to leave children in the car with the engine running or keys in the ignition -- not even for a moment. EMEMM Emmim
