The following members of the Newcastle Horticultural Society attended the District Convention in Bobcaygeon on Saturday, October 25th, Mrs. Vicki Lesnick, President, Mrs. Bertha Fisher, Treasurer, Mrs. Narda Hoogkamp, Mrs. Florence Ferguson, Mr. and Mrs. A. Whitmee, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Jose, and Mr. and Mrs. George Buckley. Mr. Clarence Tink, Hampton, was elected District Director and Mrs. Harry Jose, Newcastle, was elected Assistant Director for the southern section and Mrs. Aileen Chiddick, Bob- caygeon, for the northern section. Dr. Douglas Jose, Saska- toon, is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Jose. He is representing Saskatchewan University at a Credit Meeting in Toronto. On Saturday evening, Oct- ober 25, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Jose and family entertained their orchard crew and spouses, 42 in number, to a delicious dinner. Following the sumptuous meal, a social evening was enjoyed. Sunday visitors With Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Powell and Dale were Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Markle, Alyssa and Andrew, Alliston, and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Shetler and Wendy Oshawa, Misses Judy Poweli and Pat Lauzon, Cobourg and Mr Wayne Hunt, Pontypool. Miss Elizabeth Jose, Guelph, was a week-end guest of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Jose. After a summer recess, the Ladies Euchre Club has re- sumed. Last week, the ladies enjoyed the afternoon at the home of Mrs. Rachel Dennis. Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Burley and Mr. and Mrs. George Kimball were Wednesday evening dinner guests of Mr. Social flewca st/e ,inJ Elliott of Willowdale Mrs. Art Low has been with her mother, Mrs. C. Robertson of Toronto for the past week or so. Friday evening dinner guests with Mrs. W.H. Foster were Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Foster and their infant son. Later in the evening they all called on Mrs. M.E. Foster. Recent visitors with Miss Catherine Stewart were Mrs. Hayes and Mrs. Yelland both of Oshawa, they also visited ersonalj and lMrs. Melville Samis, Newtonville. Mr. and Mrs. Everette Stapleton, Orono, were Sun- day visitors with Mr. and Mrs. George Kimball. On Thursday 'vening, New- tonville U.C.W. held a creative Candle Demonstration. Mr. Charles Aqualina is a patient in Oshawa General Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Wade attended the 100th anniver- sary banquet on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at Kincardine. On Thursday evening they en- joyed a dinner at Cobourg Oddfellows Hall where the guest speaker was a young g entleman who went to the nited Nations this year. Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Rowe attended the Holman- Hewson wedding in Bethel Gospel Church in Kingston, on Saturday, October 25. Birthday greetings to Mrs. Florence Ferguson and Mrs. Samuel Powell. Mrs. Reg Woodhams, Scar- borough, Mrs. Leslie Alldred, Oshawa and Mrs. Robin Alldred, visited with Mr. and Mrs. Sam Powell. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Wade attended the Holman-Hewson wedding in Kingston on Satur- day, Mrs. Wade's brother, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Haskill, Toron- to, who also attended the wedding, were Saturday over- night guests with the Wades. Saturday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Walter Murphy were Mrs. Chas Wood and Mrs. McCoy, Bowmanville, Miss Marjorie Hoidge, Toronto and Mrs. Mary Brooks, Oshawa. Misses Candy Starks and Lynda Williams, Rexdale spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. William Storks. Miss Cindy Garrod, Humber College was home for the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Murray recently enjoyed a dinner with Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Murray, Oshawa. Mr. arid Mrs. Keith Ellis have returned from an enjoy- able week's holiday in Nassau. Mrs. Vincent McInnes and children, Wingham, visited her parents, Rev. and Mrs. Thomas Smith last week. Alterations are being made at our Post Office, enlarging the working area for when the mail starts coming in! Scout Report Last Monday night, Oct. 21, eight Scouts were present. After games were played, gifts were presented to Scouts who have moved up to Venturers. These three boys were Bob Forget, Gary Schmid and Kevin Southern. Anglican Church News Reverend Robert Hayne attended the Induction Service for Rev. Wigby at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Brighton, on Sunday, October 26. The Editors enjoyed the delicious fowl dinner sponsor- ed by the Fellowship Club. In the absence of the Rector, Mr. Alex Hendry, Rector's War- den, greeted the dinner guests and said the Grace. Mr. Cory Cuipers, of Northcutt - Elliott Funeral Home, gave an organ recital in St. George's Church during the evening. Mid-week Communion for the feast of St. Simon and St. Jude will be held in the Chapel on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Anglican Church women will meet at the home of Mrs. Frances Wright on Wednesday, October 29th. Rev. and Mrs. Robert H ýyne and family visited his brother in Port Dover on MVlonday. On Sunday, October 26, Rev. R.obert Hayne preached on 13reaking Down Walls, Bigotry ,and Misunderstanding - Reli- gion, Children at Communion, Ordination of Women, The Solitary Christian, The Third World, The Underprivileged Priest and Peoples, Welfare and The Worker, Priest and Self Righteousness. The ser- mon was based on the text from Ezekiel 13: My People Build a Flimsy Wall and the Prophets Praised Them for It, and Cover it With Whitewash! The Memorial Flowers were placed in memory of Mr. George Farneomb by his wife. Rev. Newcastle United Church News On Monday evening, Octo- ber 20, the Official Board met to receive a delegation from Presbytery on their official visit. At the close of the meeting, coffee hour was enjoyed at the Manse. On Sunday, October 26, Rev. Thomas Smith dedicated this day to True Nationalism. His children's story was "Saving Your Life by Losing It." The sermon "O Canada, we give ourselves to thee," instilled in the congregation that we must be mindful of the needs of others. At 8:30 on Sunday morning, Rev. Smith had conducted a service at Strathaven Nursing Home, Newcastle patients remembered in our morning prayers were Mrs. Dora mith, Miss Elsie Rowe, Miss Hattie Mason, Mr. Wellington Adams, Mr. Wellington Far- row and lMr. Wil11am Haw- kins. News On Tuesday evening, Oct. 21, the Autumn Thank-Offer- ing Meeting of the General U.C.W. was hpld. Miss Debbie Jenkins gave a highly inform- ative address of her year in Afriça. Her pictures were enjoyed by all. Unit Three of the U.C.W. met on Monday, October 20 at the home of Mrs. Margaret Rudman. About 13 ladies enjoyed the Thanksgiving De- votional and the social time which followed. Stevens attended the Oshawa Presbyterial Regional meet- ing ou Monday Oct. 20th in Maple Grove United Church. The theme of the day was 'The Whole Family of God.' During the afternoon the guest speaker was Rev. Gerald Brown, Chaplain of Pine Ridge School, Bowmanville. On Wednesday Miss C. .atewart and Mrs. R. Elliott went on the bus trip with Orono U.C.W. ladies to the McMichael's Canadian Collec- tion of Art in the village of Kleinburg. The building dis- plays some seven hundred works of Canada's most famous artists. eSpending the day with Mrs. Trene Danbar of Peterborough were Mr. and Mrs. R. Elliott also Mr. and Mrs. Alfred HAY On Saturday evening, Oct. 25, the Haydon folk gathered at the Community Centre for a presentation for Mr. and Mrs. Glen Ashton of Oshawa. The evening was spent in euchre following which Glen was escorted to a chair at the front by Jean Slemon, and Karen by Russell Tabb, a card presented to them with their gifts. A utility table was presented by Ian Graham, Doug Black- burn presented a laundry hamper on the behalf of the community. A bounteous lunch was served. The Haydon children are invited to the Community Centre for their party, after their trick and treat on ELIZABETHVILLE Church services were held as usual. Rev. R. Bartlett spoke on, "Seeing the Wag- ons." The choir sang. We are holding a ganie night at Garden Hill Nov. 7 at 8 p.m. Our institute meeting wiil be Nov. 4th and our U.C.W. Nov. llth, both in the afternoon at Mr and Mrs. H. Thickgon's. A quality will be held the weeK of Nov. 17 at Mrs. B. Wheelers. On Wednesday an excellent turkey supper was served at the church by the Stewards. On Monday we put in a quilt at Mrs. B. Wheeler's and on Tuesday finished it as well as making dressing for the tur- keys for Wednesday. Mrs. H. Thickson spent Thursday in Toronto. Mr. and Mrs. H. Quantrill returned from Cornwall on Wednesdav. Mrs. B. Wheeler entertained last Sunday and had Mr. and Mrs. H. Sowden; Mr. and Mrs. B. Cook and family; Mr. and Mrs. J. Wheeler, and Sherry. Mr. and Mrs. W. Lerbenche and family, Port Hope; Mr. and Mrs. R. Crombie and boys were with Mr. and Mrs. C. Mercer last Sunday. Mrs. R. Provost and Angie, Lindsay, spent a few days with Mr. and Mrs. O. Mercer recently. Mr. John Dekoker, Sunder- land, spent Friday night with Thicksons. Mrs. H. Thickson, Mrs. Robt. Westheuser and girls left for Brantford on Tuesday to spend a few days with Mr. and Mrs. H. Staats. Misses Doris and Diane Beatty spent the weekend with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. Beatty. Mr. Garry Fowler was away on a field trip to do with school at Ryerson over the weekend. the Clark Township Museum and on Sunday evening Miss Stewart was a dinner guest in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Don Tansley of Orono. Kendal folk were well rep- resented at Newtonville church on Sunday morning for their Anniversary Services where Rev. Gerald Brown, Chaplain of Pine Ridge school was the guest minister with three of his boys from the school. Eric Lambeer also favoured us with several numbers on the piano, which was exceptionally good. Rev. G. Montgomery left during the last hymn to be in Kendal for the 11:15 service. His to was 'The Light of the World' and Mrs. A. Foster played the' organ. We were glad to see so many out to Sunday School and hope we may have a choir soon. The three-in-one Couples Club held a Masquerade Dance in Newtonville hall on Saturday night. The Jack and Jill Club from Bowmanville were guests. All report having a good time.
