The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville Decemnber 3, 197.5 Bob Beers' Major Atoms Shut Out Cobourg 4-O but Lose Next Two Encounters Followiog a Nqv. 15 victory of 4-O over the Cobourg Cougars the Bob Beer's Major Atom Toros have taken two losses, one league action, the other in exhibition play with ,Port Hope. Chuck Nash, after several hard shot attempts that were warded off by the Coburg netminder, broke bis jinx in the game to gain one of the four goals on an assist from Scott Masters. While George Kennett bril- lia ntly defended the Toro's net for the shut-out, Rav Uum- mings added two goals one from Greg Smith and another from Jeff Jacques while Kelly, Mathews added a fourth, unassisted. Kennett continued his excel- lence in goal during the first period of the Port Hope contest which the opponents would otherwise bave run into double figures. Robert Giedlinger gained the only Toro's goal of the 5-1 thumping' an assist f rom Masters in the first period. The teamn showed a lack of confidence Nov. 23 against a powerfu] Whitby club, being out-hustled and out-passed to a 7-0 victoryfor the opposing crew. Highest credit again goes to goalie,' George Kennett who came into net in the late stages of the game and held Whitby to only one goal in the final period. Mary Brown's Novice Toros Edge Whitby-Brooklin 3 fo- 2 On Saturday, November 29th, the Bowmanville Mary Browns Novices played host to a vastly improved Whitby- Brooklin squad, and handed the visîtors a 3-2 defeat to iocrease their record to eîght consecutive wins in O.M.H.A. League play. Whitby-Brooklin jumped mbt a 2-O iead early in the opening period on goals by their captain David McWhir- ter. The Toros' Captain Chris Dreossi connected on an unassisted tally to narrow the margin to une goal at the 3.03 mark of the same period. Defenceman Pierre St. Amand lied the game when he scored, the assists going to Tom NMcGlaughlin and Brent Neill. Dreossi notched the winning goal at the 8:42 mark of the first period, assisted by his wingers McGlaughlin and Neill. The rest of the game was scoreless with both teams haviog some excellent scoring chances. Chris Clifton was in goal for Bowmanville and was Up a Tree? 42 very steady later in the game aflter a rather shaky start. The Novices ýnow have a total of 20 points in League play with only one defeat so far this season. Bowmanville's next game is Saturday when they host Pickering at 12 noon in the Memorial Arena. Norm Cafik were on hand at Clarke High School last Wednesday to present opposing opinions on the day's resolution -- that capital punishment be abolished in Canada. Clarke student Gordon Cochrane,' in centre of photo, organized the event which brought debating teams from seven high schools to argue the much-discussed capital punishment issue. On Sat., Nov. 29 the same Markham teama travel- led t0 Bowmanvilie and took revenge on Bowmanville, beating them 8-3. Jo Markham, the team went loto the game very confident and controlled every aspect of the game. Strong forecheck- ing and passing by the- forwards was backed up by a strong defensive game includ- ing dazzling saves by Bob Koczulab in the net. The scoring attack was domioated by the Johnston- Sarginson-Leddy combination which conoected for 13 of 14 Markham Games scoring points. Jerry Johoston was high man with five goals and one assist. Terry Sarginson had two each and JerryLeddy had one goal and two assists. The other point was an assist credited lu Kim Storgaard. ,Back in Bowmanville, the game was close until the third period when the visitors hanged in five goals. Bowmanville was slow getting started but fought back taking a close 24-23 win. The next game that the Seniors will play will be a bOSSA final against Oshawa Catholie at C.L. Roberts.
