A number of arenas in Ontario have collapsed in recent years, causing sorne loss of life. Apparently the rnain causes have been the lack of professional engineering expertise in the roof design or a professional design made ýprior to the current technical knowledge, which evolvedl in the early 1950s, The Cornrittee, in expr-essinig its strong concern, undertook to bring the rnatter to the attention of ail munici- pal counlcils, and therefore a letter will be sent to the heads, of sorne 800 local rnunicipal councils urging that they take irnrediate steps, through professional engineer'ing consultation, to ensure that their arenas rneet thle requirernents of The National Building Code, of Canada.
