8 The Canadian Statesman, BoWmanville, December 31, 1975 FLASHBACK-25 YEARS AGO - Speedy Maxie Yourth rammed home one goal and gained two assists on goals by Bob Bird to start Bowmanville Imperials on the way to defeating Cobourg Pays 7-5. Jerry Burkhart turned in a stellar performance in goal. Serving two minute penalties in the second period were Hogan, Hicks and Cowle. Also scoring for Bowmanville were Lintner, Dionne, Hicks, Bird and McCloskey. FLASHBACK-10YEARS AGO - Petra Burka will skate at the Bowmanville Figure skaing Annual Carnival. Clarence Oke received confirmation this week that she will appear as guest star. MATT LEYDEN.DIES-Funeral services were held on Sat. for Matthew (Matt) Leyden who died in Oshawa after devoting more than 50 years of his life to junior hockey in Ontario. Mr. Leyden was in his.72nd year. As one of the driving forces behind the formation of the Oshawa junior hockey team, Mr. Leyden first served, as transportation co-ordinator in 1923. He became manager of the club in 1928 and served in that capacity until 1953. _.During his tenure as manager, the Oshawa club ,won seven consecutive Ontario Hockey Association championships and three Memorial Cups. In 1954 Mr. Leyden joined the ranks of the OHA executive and worked bis way up to the post of president of the league and he held the top job, from 1965-67. He also served on the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association. In 1956 Mr. Leyden was presented with the OHA's Gold Stick award for dedication and service to the sport and was given, a life membership to the league in 1972. On the Sth annveraryof his involvement in amateur hockey, Mr. Leyden donated a trophy to the OHA Major Junior A series to be awarded annually to the league's top coach. This year the Ontario Hockey Association bonored Mr. Leyden by naming one of the new Major Junior A divisions after him. Mr. Leyden leaves his wife Thelma, a daugbter Margaret (Mrs. Daniel Gray of Osbawa) and brothers Gordon, of Toronto, and Robert of Oshawa. Robert or Bob, as he is known locally, is a popular member of Bowmanville Country Club. STILL A FEW TICKETS - A few tickets are stili available for the hockey game here on Sunday, Jan. 4th between a team of Swedish Juveniles and the Bowmanville St. Mary's Cernent Juveniles. The game will start at 7 p.m. in Bowmanville Arena. Tickets may be purehased at Frank's Variety and Goheen's Handy Store. This should be a great inter- national event. The Swedîsh boys will be entertained here prior to the game, given a tour of the town and be welcomed by civie dignitaries. CAMPING - on Wheels opens at the Automotive Building, Exhibitionl Place, February 4-8, 1976. Featured at the exhibition of Canadian-built travel trailers, camping trailers and accessories will be Canadian Humourist and country philosopher, "Charlie Farqubarson'" of Parry Sound. "Charlie" will have his own specially equipped trailer alongside the Coleman Campsite on the mezzanine floor and will be part of the stage entertainment which also features the well-known Rbythm Pals. WRESTLING - congratulations to Courtice High School who placed fourth in the regional wrestling match held at Anderson Collegiate last week. Placing first in the 115 lb. match was Brian MeClaine, Courtice. First in 148 lbs., Grant Simon. First in the 194 lb. class, Garry Nemisz, Courtice. PETERBOROUGH CONSOLS- one of the great curling events of the season will be held in Peterborough Memorial Centre, February 11, 12, 13 and 14, 1976.
