4Z The '7anadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Januarv 14, 1976 Town Hall Pi geons Maly, Face Traps -The well discussed pgo problem at the Town H a I in Bwmanvi11e again met somne cotroversy at the Committee of the Whole Monday. A previous recommendation aoted by council had been to irstall, with the use of the îPublic Utilities 'cherry- picker', chieken wire around tecpola on the roof. Rt was feit, although Coun. Ivan Hobbs, disagreed, that tilis would alleviate the pro- blem by keeping the pigeons out of t he cuýpola. .mayor Rickard advised lýfnda-y that hie had been approached by a party who would be willing to trap the pigeons and remove them at no cost to the town. Coun. Hobbs stressed that if such were to be permitted, the chficken wire installation pre- vibusly approved should not be done. Some feit that both should be done but Coun. Hobbs wts ely expiai ned that the traps would have to placed in thée cupola and if the wire were put around it the pigeons wou1d not be able to get into the traps. Coun. Hobbs further aclvised when some feit the traps could be placed outside on the roof, that they would not stay fixed to the slippery siate'roof surface. Two suggestions were alter- natively offered b y Coun. Anin Cowman, one being to cover the entire roof with a loosely supported wire mesh as she had good advise from a pigeon kèeper that they will not land on an unstable surface. Coun. Cowman's second suggestion, offered after the f irst was unanimously turned down, was to use a. birth control substance which she reported is being done with birds in England. The committee agreed to rescind the previous decision ànd allow persons to trap, with an aýreemnent to be si ned that tMe town would bol5 no liability for them. Strangely, the remainder of council does not seem- to eompýrehend the problem area which Coun. Hobbs has, point- ed out continuously. Coun. Hobbs has stressed that the problem is not the pigeons £ongregating on the roof of the building but rather those roosting under the eaves' and making a mes s on the front steps with their drop- pings. Coun. Hobbs suegested &bat the chicken wire is the probable solution, but that it should instead be placed around under the eaves to keep the pigeons from sitting on t e ledge there and leaving suchi a messy, unwelcoming appearance on the front steps.
