Their site is located on the south side of Bowmanville's Base Line east of Waverley Road - the former Allia Farm site. At a recent Regional Council meeting, Messrs. Gardiner and Roberts, lawyers for the Group, introduced cornes- pondence asking for Council's permission to make a Region- ai presentation of their client's pro ject. The matter was referned by the Regional Council to the Region Planning and Develop- ment Committee. III am wondering what the reaction of Town of'Newcastle people will be towards this shopping centre proposal," Counillor Kenneth E. Lyall queried in a recent news, release. "Would people be ln favor of sucb a project?" Councillor Lyall stated that he was undecided in his personal acceptance of the idea of a major shopping centre of 25.4 acres in-Town limits. "Is it generally realized what impact the Oshawa Shopping Centre had on the downtown core area of'Osb- awa? In my opinion the new complex killed downtown Oshawa as a shopping dis- trict. " Mr. Lyall stated "We have three present shopping areas in the Town of Newcastle - the Bowmanville Main Street, Newcastle Village's King Street and Orono's Main Street - would' a major shopping centre fronting on the 401 kill these comniunity centres?" The Pythagoras Group first applied to the Regional Gov- ernment lai July 1974 for a required amendment to plan- ning laws governing their property which is zoned agri- cultural. This request was tabled by Region until the Newcastle Town planning was com- pleted. Ia May 1975, the Newcastle Town Council approved its Interim District Plan but under this'document, the Pythagoras property was des- ignated as an Enviroamental Study Area. This stipulation would not allow the Group to proceed pending further study by the Town of Newcastle officiais. "The Pythagoras Group with a big dollar tied up la their land holdings in the old Allia Farmh property are not about to give up their plans. "Mr. Lyall concluded. "If the people of the Town of New- castle have 4ny feelings - pro or con - on the subject of a major local shopping centre, they would be well advised to make their position known to the Newcastle Town Council." The overal death rate from heart attack disease has been reduced by 28, per cent since 1950. How o Get a Mortgage Sby John ,Squirrelly 1 received a notice a while ago that my mortgage wasup for renewal so I contacted the kindly old gentleman who held it with the sure knowledge that it would be easily rewritten. After ail, he was my godfather. When I dropped over to his- bouse, I found hlm poring over a stack of travel folders. "Going on a holiday,"I asked? "Yep" he cackled, "that's why I want your mortgage paid off next week." "Next week" I blithered? "That's awfully short notice." "Fooje," he snorted, "you've known for five years that it would be due next week. 1 just retired yesterday and I'm going to use that money for a trip around the world. Now dig up ten grand by Wednesday or l move 'your furniture out onto the side- Walk." same benevolent oid fellow who used to bounce me on his knee when 1 was young? The one who had been a friend of the family ever since I could nemember? When 1 mentioned oun past close relationship, be scoffed. " BAH! I've worked 45 years for this, and now I'm going to enjoy myseif. I just had my pension transferred to Switz- erland and I'm going there to join it. If I happen to think of it, L'Il send you a handfuI of sand from the Riviera. Now, stop sniveliing and buzz off." I was desolated but thene appeared to be no doubt that he meant it. I had visions of my family and me huddled together on the street as the bailiffs contemptuously tossed our treasured possessions out the front doon and onto the road. I shuçldered. The next day, 1 hurried down to the trust oempany to make an application for a mortgage. I was ushered into a sleek office that glistened with chrome and introduced to a well-dressed young man who looked like he had just stepped out of hýis hair stylist's salon. The namne plate'on his desk read: R. Jason Fiicb, B.A. "Well, well," he said, "so >VEe FBOYS lOti 5//IOI HRF, : 'PMODERN I/FAT HARVEY PARTNER OR ON0 9 83-5206 ESSO HOME HEAT 1SERVICE you'd like a mortgage?" I assuned him I wouldf. "What is your occupation, Mn. Squinnelly," be asked, bis pen poised over the appli- cation form. Well, I was a tree surgeon, but I developed an aflergy to ladders and had to quit." lieý ieaniedislowly back in bis, executive swivel chair. S"You mean to say you have no job? and no income?" be said. "Ub, not at the moment, but I expect to find something aay day aow. The thiag is, I'm only askiag for f en thousaad and the bouse is easily wonth four times that mucb. I mean, tbere's no risk on your pant at al." 1 He smiled condescendiagly. "But wbat, canI show for a debt to earnings ratio? And how cati I be sure that the amortized rate schedule will be satisfactorily met? Do you, know tbat there are eleven diffenent tests for applicants which are designed to prove that tbey really doa't aeed the moaey at all? And they must pass ail of them before we will approve a boan?" Furtber conversation got me aowhere so I tbaaked him and left. Checkiag with several othen mortgage leaders resulted la tbe same response., Thorougbly discouraged, 1 trooped into a small bar aad ordened a drink. Striking up a conversation with the chap seated next to me, 1 mentioned my problem. He took the ivory toothpick out of bis moutb and turned to me. "I think I got a solution for you," he said. He weat to the telephone and made a cail, thea came back t0 his seat. "A friend of mine is coming over in about ten minutes. He's got some money to lead." Whea bis friend arrîved, we took a table at the rear of tbe room. He iatroduced bim self as Mn. Smith and, even though it was almost like night there, he kept his dark glasses on. "You need ten G's, eh? What's your scam, fenciag?" "Beg pardon?" I said. "What's your racket? Are you a feace? " "No," I said, "I'm a tree, 1 mean, a tree surgeon.", "Okay," he said with ýa shrug, "I don't really cane. Here's the tea G's. Our rate is six per cent .-" "Why, that's excellent," I' exclaimed. .,...per moath." I blinked.,"Isai't that a littie high? " 1 "Depends on how bad you want the moaey," be said. I made some quick calcu- lations. -If I got a job in a week or so, I could get a negular mortgage and pay hlm back witbin a moath. I told him this, "No hurry," he said, "just pay the iaterest every month, Keep the moaey as long as you like." "But, do't you want a regular mortgage signed," I1 asked? "For your own pro-, tection? " He smiled, sbowing a number of goldteetb. "In this business", he said, "you learn to trust people. Why, I can't ever recal aving a problemn collecting, can you Rockey?" The other man shook bis head. "Neyer," he said. Pickering and for the past six years have resided la Oshawa. Mr. Smider was employed by Johnson Bros.
