8 The Canadian Statesmian, Bowmanville, March 24, 1976 Section Two Enn is killen 'Girl Wins Colt at Quarterama feeding bulîs in- groups. The gain of each bullis recorded over 140 days and at the'test's end, each bull- is given an index which compares his rate of gain with others in the group. Therefore a bull index- ing higher than 100 on the test gain more rapilly than the group average. The rate of gain is a highly heritable characteristic that can be pas sed' on to the bull's offspring. A fact which can mean an improved feed efficiency in the feedlot. Cow Caîf Producers will have the opportunity to see some of the best Performance Tested Bulîs on April ist when gan open house and sale of bulis takes place at the Arkell Research Station - just south of Guelph. An Open Forum has been planned on the Performance Tested Bulîs and specialists will be on hand to explain the, Beef Cattie Per- formance Testing Program. Following that, the 12 and 13 month bulls will be offered for sale on a private treaty basis by their individual owners. As we announced last week, other Open Houses will be held at the New Liskeard College of Agricultural Technology on May 4; at Kemptville College of Agriculture- Technology on May 14 and at the Ridgetown College of Agriculture Tech- nology on May 18, as well as a_ second day at Arkell 'on May l9th. Remnembert the key to success in a cow-calf oper- ation is to carry out effective management practices and onè of the main ones, is the use of good Performance Tested, Bulîs in your herd. New Performance index for Station-Tested Boars A new Performance Index for boars which complete tests at the Ontario R.O.P. Swine Test Station has recently been implemented. The Perform- ance Index for each boar is based upon the three im- portant economic factors: Backfat thickness, average daily gain and feed con- version, which are evaluated at the Test Station. These factors are incorporated into one single composite index of economie menit. The average Performance Index of each group of boars which com- pletes each month is 'always 100. As each group of boars has been raised under uniform feeding, management and other environmental con- ditions, differences in per- formancecan be attributed to' genetic differences which will be passed on to the pigs they sire. Upon completion of tests, backfat thickness is measured ultrasonically and average daily gain and feed conversion calculated. An average for the entîre group for these im- portant economnic factors is thefi ascertained. In calcu- lating the performance index for each bo ar, the difference between the individual figures for backfat thickness, average daîly gain and feed conversion and the group average for these, factors are weighed according to, the relative economic: importance and heritability of the three factors. This weighted differ- ence is added to or subtracted from 100 to yield a composite performance index for each boar. An index of 100 is average and Performance indices for, individual boars normally range from approx- imately 140 down to as low as 60. Ahl boars with a Perform- ance Index of 100 or higher or in other words the top 50 per cent of the boars are eligible for sale under the Perform- ance Testing Program. This top 50 per cent on Perform*- ance is inspected for physical soundness by a culling com- mittee and if approved, are offered for sale at the monthly station tested- boar sales, which are held, at the Test Station, R.R. 2, New Ham- burg. Although the actual figures for each boar on backfat thickness, average daily gain and feed conver- sion, are also reported. The Ktwanis Switch- to Breakfast The Bowmanville Kiwanis Club striving for new mem- bers, are making a change of meeting time. It was decided at the March 8 meeting at which Lt. Gov. Dennis Sweetîng was present, that the club would switch to a "breakfast", meeting com- mencing promptly at 8 a.m. on Wednesdays. .This is an experiment which has proven successful in other locations as if does not tie one up for an evening away from home and family and enables themeal and club business to be completed in a one hour- period. The first meeting at the new timfe will be held- on April 7, probably in the regular Ki- wanis meeting quarters of the Flying Dutchman Motor Inn. A' main* concern of the Performance Index is the best, single performance figure upon which you should base your selection, if you are trying to buy a boar which will make the' maximum overal improvement in the economic returns from the pigs he sires in your herd. Me eing Bowmanville Kiwanis at pre- sent is to try to get their younger offspring, Key Clubs,, started in the local high schools. In this light, Key Club Convenor John Cowan of Port Hope was invited to speak at the March 1 meeting to which principals of the local high sehools were invited. The Vice Principal and Guidance Head from Courtice Secondary attended and are reported to have shown keen interest in the idea. They are to further advise the students on the -proposal and purpose of Key Clubs and five mnutes report back to the Kiwanis as it is possible that somne student representation might be sent to theKey Club Convention in London on April 24 te gain further knowledge of the organization.
