2 The Canadian Statesman, "Out of Tihe Mouths of Babes"' by E.P. Chant' As you may well remember, in last week's "Letters to the Editor" Mr. George Sand of Lindsay was hoping my "chanting" would stop. How witty. Unfortunately (for some- one, l'in sure), l'mn going to make one more reply and then try to get back to some more regular stuff in the following weeks. The question that may be raised is why arn I doing it at ail? Isn't it unprofessional to answer criticism? Yes, basically, I think it is. However, 1 think this matter (the monarchy or not) is a good issue for public debate. Now, granted, a newspaper is a difficuit medium to carry a debate on in, but t's better than nothing. Also, I've answered one letter already, so flot to challenge more would be to agree 'With their argu- ments. I'm not going to concede a point until someone makes one. Tradition is not such a point - if you said in a debate that you should retain the mioaarchy simply because of tradition, you'd be drum- med out of the hall. There haveý to be more logical reaSons. Even my editor has tried to get me to shut up. Attached to the reply to the first "Letter to the Editor" was this: "Chant, you're getting in deeper and deeper." That's quite possi- ble, but then again, the letters are getting shallower and shallower. Case la point, Mary A, Morris' wide-sweeping blunt-edged machete of last week. You should make up your mind how you feel about kids, Ms. Morris. At first you seem to detest them when referring their treatment to that of the naine of this columa ("... your Babes' drooling mouths and the need of having their chins wiped and their behinds spanked.") (unquote). As for people's children doing no wrong, if you really want to defend kids that throw snow- balîs and whip you with skipping ropes for no apparent reason, I guess that's your privilege. I'd also like to apologize for using the bril- liant poetry, of two of the world's great humourists, Ogden Nash and Hilarie Belloc. Its a shame to waste such wr"Iings. You then bring regligion into it - a piece that advocates the use of "the rod". I'd far rather give a kid a good sarcastic talking to than a good bard whack, Again, that's your privilege, but, in this one instance, at least, Christian gentleaess and forgiveness don't'seem to ~playý, much of a part. Mrs. Craig hardly did every- thing with reference to my statements concerniag our "affiliation with Great Bni- tain." The country was hardly the crux of the matter. I have nothing làgainst the country or the people. I don't think we're being dominated by THEIR queen. I realize that l'mi in a mînorîty now, but give it ten years and we'll see. Thaak you for liking "Seals". I didn't. The per- spective or something chaag- ed half-way through and it didn't finish the way it started. Oh welli a lot of people liked it - 1 guess it was a different approach. As for being' a radical, you should be glad some of us are stili around, having to live with ahl you conservatives. Without a littie electric shock to the senses, you'd ahl be dying complacently right now instead of gettiag angry and writing in to the editor about the crazy anti-monarchist.
