Letter to April 5,1976 Dear Mr. and Mrs. James: On behalf of the High School Band Association please let me extend our thanks for your help in our Disney World project. This was a very worthwhile project and educational. The students worked hard to raise money to augment the help they received from the com- munity. While they were away, they learned to live under circumstances not always comfortable and to perform capably in situations less than ideal and still corne home smiling. Members of the band were excellent ambassadors for Bowmanville and Canada wherever they went in Flor- ida. They were very well- received and we can be very proud of them. The notices inserted in Bits and your kind editorial helped us keep the citizens of Bowmanville informed in a the Editor way that would have been impossible without your enthusiastic support. Again, many thanks. Sincerely, Shirley M. Frank, Secretary. Dear Editor: In answer to Ms. Liz Armstrong's questions as to where I would prefer to live (after Bowmanville, of course), in London, England, or New York City - I thought that this might happen. It seems a Canadian cannot say anything complimentary about the U.S.A. (even about the ideals of their constitution- al documents) without being accused of being pro-Ameri- can. I am not pro-American or anti-British, but pro-Canadian and anti monarchy. Whether the two go together remains to be seen. Yours forever clarifying, E.P. Although admitting that there are, as an example, many beautiful species of birds in such areas as Florida, Mr. Richards explained that to us they are considered exotics while more life forms are found here than else- where. Among the ttractive collection of slides of birds and other animals dependant on marshlands for their exist- ence, Mr. Richard displayed some depicting the disregard people have for our natural resources. He explained that until a couple of years ago, a stream which flows into the Oshawa marsh, had overflow effluent from the cities' sewage dis posal plant dumped directly into it. At present, although the province did put a stop to such a practice, the plant still has provision to dump chemicals from industry into the stream in an emergency, rather than pumping them through the plant "White in the water is not as pretty as the white snow along the banks," Mr. Richards commented while a slide projected on the screen show- ed a typical scene of foaming waste in a stream. Noting that it is fine for a politician to question the need for maintaining marshlands, Mr. Richards stood firm on the basis that there are numerous possibilities for harbor locations but not so for marshes. The long standing battle over the proposed location of a harbor in the Oshawa marsh has only recently come to a head with the naturalists demanding answers. As to the need for the harbor, Mr. Richards advised that existing industries claim it is cheaper to ship overland by rail and truck. Claiming not to question the government's knowledge of a need for a harbor, Mr. Richards did however suggest that such is what amazes the naturalists through the gov- ernment's insistence on put- ting a harbor in the marsh. He was.insistent that if the marsh were not there and it was decided that a harbor was a necessity, it would be built elsewhere, probably out into the lake similar to Toronto. Letter to the Editor 690 Cosburn Ave., Toronto, Ont. The Editor: Bill Smiley's columns are always interesting but his "Winter's End," March 31 issue said everything. Surely each reader should cut it out and place it in a Treasure scrapbook. It's a CLASSIC. May we repeat in part Mr. Smiley's concluding sentences "but happy as simpletons, fundamentally incapable of being depressed, just glad to be alive. Join us."
