Wood Transport Minor Bantams became the second Bowmanville Team to win an Ontario championship when they wiped out Dunnville 5-1 in a game that saw considerable squabbling among the fans and many penalties. Former well-known referee Royce Weatherbee, now District Convenor for the Lakeshore was on hand to make the trophy presentations. At his left is goalie Dana Ruthermund of Dunnville, receiving the OMHA's Runner-up trophy and at right, Capt. Wood Transport Minor Bantams have won their respective Ontario titles, and the St. Marys Cement Redmen Juveniles are three games to one against Essex in their quest for an Ontario title. Finish Season in Style Bowmanville Broadloom Bantams werefacingelimina- tion with only 46 seconds remaining in their third play- off game against Markbam after Markham had taken the first two games in the best 3 out of 5 Lakeshore Bantam No. 2 A Town Finals. Mark- ham was leading 3-2 in the third game but witb 46 seconds remaining on the dlock Kevin Ward scored the equalizer for Bowmanville to force over- time. After that very import- ant goal Bowmanville came back and won the series. The series started at DSC March 20, Nick Gibbs assisted by Scott Clifton opened the scoring with 7:11 remaining in the second period. Markham scored 3 unanswered goals, winnîng the game 3-1. Bowmanville travelled to Markham and the second loss, the next day. Markham came out flying and scored 2 goals witbin the first 21/2 minutes. Bowmanville scored inuthe second period by Nick Gibbs unassisted, Markham came back with 3 more goals. Bowmanville managed 1 more goal by Andy Paton. Final score 5-2 Markham. The third game DSC April 2, Bowmanville took an early lead in the first period with 2 goals, the first by Cbuck Welsb, assist Brad Hockin, the second Nick Gibbs, assists Scott Clifton and Jim Braun. Markham came back and scored 3 goals, the last one at the 6 minute mark of the third period. With only 46 seconds left in the game Kevin Ward took a bard low shot at the Markham goalie and scored, assists by Scott Clifton and Russ Carruthers. The game went into 10 minutes of overtime and when Nick Gibbs broke the tie and scored his fourth goal of the series, assist going to Brian White. Bowmanville scored again by Garry Eeuwes, assîsted by Scott Clifton and Paul Des- roches. Final score Bowman- ville 5, Markham 3. The locals went back to Markham for the fourth game. Markham tied the score 1 minute later. Chuck Welsh put Bowmanville out in front assisted by Brad Hockin and Garry Eeuwes. Markham came back to equalize the tally but the tielasted only 32 seconds as Chuck Welsh, who with his third goal put Bowmanville out in front, assisted by Brian White. The final period of the game was played mostly at centre ice, until the 9 minute mark when Scott Clifton gat a break. He fed the puck to Nick Gibbs who in turn finished the play with a picture goal. Markham scored the last goal making it 4-3 in favour of the Toros. The Iast and final game was played at DSC Saturday, April 10. This time due to strong goal tending of Bowmanville's Brooke Cole and the hard working defensive pairs of Jim Braun, Bruce Schouten, Brian White and Russ Car- ruthers, Markham scored the first goal of the game. After that goal it was all Bowman- ville. Chuck Welsh opened the scoring, assists going to Brad Hockin and Garry Eeuwes. The second Bowmanville goal was scored by Brad Hockin assisted by Kevin Ward. Wood Minor Bantam played game No. 3 in the best of 5 series in the All Ontari playoffs in Dunnville on Sat. Apr. 10, losing by the score o 7-3.' Dunnville opened the scor ing in the first period with our Toros fighting back to even the score near the end of th period with Randy MacDonal scaring fromn Rick Simpson and Kevin Noble. In the second, Dunnville dominated play, scoring three unanswered goals ending th period at 4-1. In the third, Bowmanville's Steve Braun scored at the tw' minute mark on a good pass from Ken Hoy. Dunnville scored at the five minute mark to make the score 5-2. With six minutes remaining and aur boys applying the pressure, Steve Braun having an exceptionally strong two- way game, got his second goal assisted by Rick Simpson. Dunnville finished off the scoring getting two goals, one being into an empty net. Final score 7-3 for Dunnville. After losing Sat., our H.L. Wood Minor Bantams came back to Bowmanville toplay Sun, at 6 p.m. coming away with a big win by the score of 5-1 to win the All Ontario title. In the first at the 12 minute mark, Randy MacDonald on a strong second effort after being knocked down in front of their net, quickly regained his balance and drove the puck past the Dunnville netminder assisted by Rick Simpson and Kevin Noble. On a good three way passing play on the power play, Rick Simpson won the face-off, tbrawing the puck -back ta Brent Clemens on the point who in turn gave a good pass to Carl Chambers who bit Rick Simpson with a perfect pass in front of their net and drove a hard shot into the top corner of their net. Two minutes later, our captain Rick Simpson, playing a strong two way game, stale the puck fromn their defenceman at our blue line and got a breakaway, scoring a picture goal. On the power play atthe 14 minute mark, Toros' Randy Mac- Donald playing a strong two-way game on right wing, Scored his second goal with assists to Carl Chambers and Rick Simpson. This ended the period with our Toros holding a commanding 4-0 lead. In the third, Dunnville's Tracey Taylor scored on a breakaway at the 12:40 mark. This ended our chance of a well deserved shutout for our netminder Mark Shackelton and John Storgaard. With just 25 seconds remaining our aggressive No. 7, Terry Riggers tore in from the point and scored with the assist to Rick Simpson. Wood played 20 exhibi- tion and tournament games mainly against tough "AAA" and major bantam clubs. Also playing 19 league games with only four losses our Toros ended up in second place in the Lakeshore League. Playing 21 games in the playoffs with a record of 14 wins, 3 ties and 4 losses to eliminate Markham, Gananoque, Collingwood, Mil- ton and Dunnville to win the All Ontario Minor Bantam Championship. With a total team effort giving us a successful season giving us a successful season goals against average. On Saturday, the Bowman- ville Mary Brown's Novices travelled to Orillia to take part in the annual Y's Mens Invitational Novice Tourna- ment. The Toros were elimin- ated from the tourney in the second round by the Oshawa "AAA" Ail-Stars. In their first game on Saturday morning at 9:00 o'clock the Bowmanville squad defeated Georgetown by a very convincing score of 7-0. Bowmanville led 1-0 at the end of the opening stanza on a goal by Brian Heard, assisted by Chris Dreossi.
