4 The Canadian Statesman, Bo wmanville, April 21, 1976 In the Edtor's Mai Bowmanville, Ontario April 19, 1976 Dear Mr. Editor: When we wrtie a letter to The Editor of a paper we sign our name. Right? But when we make a complaint against our neighbor for whatever reason,' we can hide behind our telephone. No name. Is this fair? Having occupied this plot of land for 26 years; moved in with the street. 'Andbelieved ourseif to be a iaw-abiding citizen (even wondered if perhaps we might qualify as the Matriarch of Meadow- view) until now. And be- cause - Every springtime we find it necessary to make a fire; the only way we have to dispose of the larger refuse of the garden, as the winter leaves our lawns littered with small branches and twigs from several large trees. There's also dead wood fr9m vines, shrubs and prickly hedges, material quite unsuitable for the compost pile. Oh yes, we've been told to pack this in plastic garbage bags and put it on the curh. But if anyone ever needs a lesson in frustra- tion we'd suggest trying this as a starter. We've, had a fîre permit though it's flot always easy to get into town at the right time to obtain such. So we've called the Police Dept. and been given permission (unless your neighbors complain) and through the years our neigh- hors have been most kind about this. But home-owners change. The gentlemen who called were Gentlemen, merely doing their duty and very understanding. No gripe here. And while a mature aduit would, we believe, consider well before doing this or only, after prolonged provocation, there's the young, SO eager to, exercise their rights. This was their right. And youth mrust be served. However, w riting this is not to 'complain about our com- plainers' but to offer a suggestion for saving town- dolIlars. Sending two men with a vehicle across town after regular workîng hours in- volves money. Does it not? Anid we're pretty sure that even a chronic fault-finder would hesitate to express a minor griev4nce were it necessary to he identified. Here, we recaîl this little story; a favorite of my late hushand. A woman phoned her local police complaining that some boys were swimming nude in a nearhy pond. The police talked to the boys and suggest-ed that they- move to aterplaeceoedsac dowstream. But, she phoned again and when'informed of this she replied "Yes, 1 know, but when 1 stand on a chair and use my binoculàrs I can stili see them. Sincerely, -Reta M. Berrill Dear Mr. James: Concernîng thestory "Ted and Paul and Joe and Pierre" whîch appeared last week with my byline - I did not write it. Furthermore, 1 have no wif e, no children (to my knowledge, no aspidistras with leaf rot, and no desire to dream about Pierre Trudeau, much less Joe Morris. 1 hope the author of the story will come forth because he cer- tainly deserves the byline for such an entertaining story which I enjoyed very much. Yours unduly credited, E.P. Chant Editor's Note: Sorry, it must have been a 'Squirrelly' colurmn. We've got s0 many great columnists it's hard to keep track of them al Acciden I.
