Terms. s 17-1 .1 'il wJrev~.LIl by Dong Taylor A council committee of the whole meeting iast Wednes- day afternoon iearned that the provincial government wiii -not provide financiai assist- ance to this area at the present time for an encephalitis pre- vention program. Council recently sent a request to the province to be included i 'n the funding that is being provided to areas Iying within that market by an artificial line drawn from the top Of Metro Toronto ta Lambton. The province's repiy, how- ever, advises that there is no evidence at preserit of the disease being spread ta areas east of Toronto. They intend ta keep a close watch an the situation and if it becomes necessary, extend the pro- gram, Meanwhile, the Durham Region Health Unit is con- tinuing ta co-ordinate a pro- gram of abatement for those municipalities within the Region wishing ta participate. Correspondence from Dr, Cam Stewart advised counicil that the healtb unit wiii supply, at request of council, a sufficient number of copies &ý information ta distribute ta the public, informing Ihem of preventative measures ta take against the Culex mosquito which spreads encephalitis. ('ounicil, having recently resoived ta participate in any program against encephalitis that the region might ca- ordinate, concurred with the distribution of a few thousand copies of the information via public bulletin boards. Aiso anyone concerned with encephalitis, calling the town hall, may be sent a copy of the information. Although Coun. Bruce Tink thought it would uiîly get people concerned for no rea- son, the cammittee also re- solved taoPlace the same information in the three local newspapers in the form of an advertisement. Coun. Ken Lyall was reason- ably satisfied with this action as an initial step by council, being one who cantinually reminds council that because the Culex mosquitoes breed in any body of stagnant water, no matter how large or small, a major abatement pragram would be an enormous under- taking, He reminds that once the disease is discovered in an area an attempt can be made ta satisfy the public mind by 11,cosmetic action",' such as air-spraying but that ta pre- vent it they must be stopped in the breeding stage. Due ta the anticipated cost of such a program, Coun. Lyall suggests that for thîs year at least, people simply take heed of the information available and do their best ta eliminate the stagnant pools of Add Extra Councîl Rep 10~~ Liaion o mte '1FEH TR LC 10 ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ CUCl LIIOlL m ite RSSORE SLICE Thp Caradian Statesman. Council received a report Apr. 19 from Coun. Kirk Entwisle on a meeting that the base committee held cancern- ing the terms of reference for the committee ta follow. The committee recommend- ed that its council memfber- ship be increased to two members of council plus Mayor Riekard. Coun. Mayor Rickard suggested that the additional member should be the committee of the whole chairman. which at present is Coun. Don Aluin. Coun. Entwisie saîd he did not wish ta see the committee increased but that if Coun. Ann Cowman wished ta, serve he woôuld giadly step aside for her. With respect ta Coun. Ent- wisle, Coun. Lyall said that if he had ta choose he would rather see Coun. Cowman hold the position as she has more time availabie that Coun. Entwisle. However, he suggested that they bath be on the committee, Coun. Entwisle for his technic- ai knowiedge and Coun. Cow- Iman for her tenacity. Other additions ta, the terms of the committee were the inclusion, of the probiem of disposai of nuclear waste and a request for distribution ta council of its reports and minutes of meeting. Five members of the Town of Newcastle Council traveiled around the municipality by bus making their annual road inspection tour on Thursday, April 22. Mayor Garnet Rickard and four council members, Bruce Tink, Ivan Hobbs, Ken Lyali and Ann Cowman, made the tour ta inspect areas that have been affected by poor drain- age, landf iii sites and road allowances.
