4 The Canadian Statesmanî Bowmanville, May 26, 1976 -Wes IeyviIIe The second phase of a very interesting projeet under- taken by the United Church of Cànada was seen locally last week when 90 young people from countries around the world continued their visit to Canada. In 1975 to celebrate the 50til anniversary of the, United Church, a young person was chosen from eacb Presbytery across Canada to visit another country. In 1976 young people from countries visited, were brought here to meet Can- adians and share' in activities. On Tuesday evening, May 18th, the Bay of Quinte conference, 13 young people from Zambia together witb the exchange youth from the conference, took part in the proceedings sharing their experjences with delegates. Two of -the girls, Lilllian Nzima of Livingstone, and Annie Mafupa of the Northern Provinces came home with Elaine Kellogg who represent- ed Cobourg Presbytery. While here they spent a day at Port Hope High School, visited Durham House the school for special needs, George Hamil- ton School, and Port Hope Hospital'. Tbey attended choir practice, visited the dairy farm, and strangest experi- ence,' cut the lawn with tbe tractor mower. They were entertained by area young people at a barbecue on Friday night and met their first bot dog; sing-song and square dance led by the Junior Farmer square dance group. The evening concluded with a vesper service based on the psalms using slides and the benediction was pronounced by Rev. J. Burn of Port Hope. On Saturday Elaine accom.1p- anied the two girls to Toronto wbere in company witb other Canadians and the 90 visitors they stayed at the residence of Victoria College. nSudy eacb wasiled in a private Toronto home, attending the host's church. Elaine went with the leader of the Kenya group to a Presbyterian, service, bis denomination. On Sunday evening a full bus load from this area went to Timothy Eaton ch urch wbere every seat and corner was packed witb people to wel- come the visitors and bear the Rev. Wilbur Howard, Moder- ator. One of the girls wbo stayed with Kelloggs lived on bier fatber's farm, a farmer who bad once been a teacher. Tbey grow maize, millet, oranges and raise chickens. The'other girl's father is a doctor. The last chapter of this inter- change bas not been written. Its purpose was to foster friendsbip and understanding arnong people everywhere and witb such a beginning it is sure to grow. Cburch service at Welcome on Sunday morning was in charge of Rev.- R. Bartlett until the time for tbe morning message. The cboir's anthem was "Christ is my Guide" and the beautiful flowers were in memory of Mr. Linton, brother of Mrs. Chris Beatty. Instead of the regular morn- ing sermon Lloyd Kellog presented a very fine report of the four days of Conference and concluded 'the service. Mrs. Ken Dinner and Mrs. Roy McHolma greeted the congregation at tbe door and usbers were: Edward Irwin, Edward Hendersoni,'Donald Nichols and Alain Wilson., Mr. and iVrs. Harold Austin were bonored for the occasion of their 4tb weddiig anmi- versary when thei family entertained, them at noon dinner at the 'Red Oak in Peterborough square. Pbillip basfulfilled his early promise as a good student and has done well in bis course of work and study. He had other offers work but bas been establisbed since May first. with a. consulting firm in Toronto, "Quasar systems" and finding the projects stim- ulating. Mrs. Harold- Barrowclough wbo bas been in hospital in Port Hope for the past two weeks bad surgery performed last Friday morning and is doing well. Mrs. Emma Darke is also in hospital there and it is hoped they will be home soon. Mr, Roy Nichols is in Port Hope bospital also. He was taken' suddenly ill on Monday, ýMay 24th.
