8 The Canadian Statesmnan, Bowrnanvilie, June 2, 1976 Section Two "Qtt of Cele-.brate Thei.r 0Birthday.,s TheMouths of Babes" by E.P. Chant 1've now written fifty-one ai these columns -~ thirty-eight in a row since returning after a year-long break. 1 wonder why 1 should be drawing a blank now. For a couple of years nowu 've been writing things that don't need to be written, things that did, persona] comments, objective comn- ments, and comments from other persons. Wrath has beený incited, as weli as thought (where it neyer existed 'be- fore). I've had good replies and, of course, not so good replies. I wonder, now, after ail of this experience why 1 -can' t think of a dam (thi aiwayss been a family column) thing to, write, except.... an article on why I can't write anything. Look at the subject matter available - international irn- cidents such as the return of Richard Nixon, the deterior- ation of Mao 1Tse-tung, and the declinie of the British pound; national issues such as Pierre and his Ottawa Follies (or "How to Handle a Scandai"), the unemployment rate, the inflation rate, the dying Great Lakes, the ail shortage; and local issues found right here in "The Statesman" in the < eloquence of Kenneth Lyall, the beautiful'poetry of Marion Taylor Ford, and the hard- biting writings of the staff reporters (for instance, the war against obscenity which Rosanne and Eddie Cook will celebrate their birthdays May 28th and June 3rd, 1976. And, yet, witb ,'aIl this materiai, I can't think of a tbing to write, except, as I've said, writing about my trouble of not being able to offer you anything this week. I feel like a kid who is going in a public speaking contest (sorry, 1 mean an "oral communica-, tions festival") and can't think of a topic. The resuit is a stereo-typed, dull five-minute speech on how to write a speech. In my case, I'm telling you bow ,t o n ot wri te a col umn.
