The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, June 16, 1976 15 N ESTLETON Nestieton Ladies' Ahi The dune meeting of Neste- ton Ladies' Aid was held in the Presbyterian Church Hall on Thursday afternoon. The President, Mrs. George Hea- slip called the meeting to order and read an appropriate extract from the book "I've Got to Talk to Somebody God". Mrs. R. Davison con- ducted the Devotional dealing with "Pentecost". Miss Ruth Proutt, Secre- tary, read the minutes, a report of the Tea and Bazaar and letters from friends with a generous donation from a former member. Bills were paid and business finished. A trip to Fearney house is planned for late summer and lunch arrangements for the Anniversary on Sept. 19, when Dr. Diamond will be the guest speaker were finalized. Res- ponse to the Roll Call was a thought on "Righteousness". Mrs. Walter MeGill and her assistant Mrs. R. Davison, were in charge of the meeting. Miss Bulmer gave a colored slide commentary on "Our Church Heritage", on trips to and from Nigeria where she was a missionary, she stopped off in Europe and the British Isles and took pictures of places visited - Rome, France, Italy, Germany and England. Her first picture was of St. Peter's in Rome, where in 1300 under Pope Boniface a Jubilee attracted 30,000 worshippers per day. The pomp, beauty and luxury of that age was shown in the beautiful build- ings stili standing. Unrest forced Pope Boniface to fee to France. Pictures of Dieppe, the vineyards and the Vatican were interesting. Reformation was in the offing when 200 years later John Wycliffe opposed Roman Catholic authority, power and affluence. He was considered a heretjc as was also John Hus of Germany who read John Wycliffe's writings at a Ro- man Catholic council meeting. He was excommunicated and burned at the stake. Martin Luther was a profes- sor at a German Theolo:ical s eet College. He loved Rome but didn't like to see the power of the priests. He did not feel it is right to buy our way to heaven. So he drew up a Thesis of 95 things he didn't believe in in the church. These 95 subjects for debate Were distributed among the people and one attached to the door of the local church The church called a meet- ing. Luther attended, every- one was hostile. He left the meeting under armed guard and was befriended by the Prince of Saxony. While here he translated the Scriptures into German. He lamented "splitting the church". He died there and was buried near the University. Some beautiful slides of colorful church festivities and Catholic churches in Spain were shown. Scenes of the Canary Islands where natives live in caves dug into the hillside with beautiful homes inside, banana plantations. Westminister Abbey on Re- membrance Day, the Grand Canyon andDAlcatraz, all brought out the-essence of our church heritage. Miss Bulmer favored with old favorite songs from a musical scrap book made by Mrs.-McGill. A bountiful lunch and social hour was enjoyed for which the hostesses recei- ved hearty thanks. The ladies adjourned to meet in Septem- ber after a summer recess. Nestleton Annual Decoration Service at Union Cemetery Cadmus OnSunday afternoon a large crowd assembled attthe Union Cemetery in respect of depar- ted loved ones and to place floral bouquets as tributes to their memory. Mr. Stephen Saywéll, Osh- awa, read Scripture passages, Psalm 146, John 14:1-15 and lead in prayer. Miss Dorothy Bulmer, Dea- coness, minister in the Pres- byterian .Church, delivered a timely and inspiring message, speaking of "God's Purpose in the World". There is order in the world.
