U.C.W. Meeting On Monday, June 14th, all three units of the U.C.W. met at the Newcastle United Church Sunday School Hall for a Pot Luck Supper. A filmstrip titled "Phoney Baloney" was enjoyed and a silent auction was held. Mrs. Marjorie Paterson, on behalf of the U.C.W., presented Mrs. Margaret Smith with a going- away gift made at Sandor Ceramics. Campers must register for Camp Pretoria with Rev. Thomas Smith this week. The camp is held from July 25th to 29th. The Induction Service of the new minister, Rev. D. Spivey will be conducted by the Oshawa Presbytery on Wed- nesday, June 30th, at New- castle United Church at 7:30 p.m. The United Church S.S. Picnic was held last Tuesday at Cedar Park. There was a good attendance and an enjoy- able time for all. St. George's Anglican Church Picnic will be held at Orono Park on Sunday, June 27th. KENDAL Tabloid Day for the ele- mentary pupils of Clarke was held on Thursday, June loth in Kendal. Events took place on both the park grounds and the school grounds.'The weather was perfect for contests. Lunch was served in Kendal school for the teachers who were looking after events. As a going away gift to Rev. and Mrs. Gordon Montgomery, they were pre- sented with a beautiful Sun- burst electrie clock, also a dried flower arrangement. Rev. and Mrs. Montgomery both thanked everyone and wished to be able to attend more functions after moving to Peterborough. Rev. Mont- gomery asked all who were celebrating their wedding anniversary during the month of June to stand. Kendal U.C.W. held a suc- cessful bake sale on Saturday, June 12th at Elva Reid's Craft Shop and on June 19th was Kendal Women's Institute bake sale. Kendal Women's Institute met on Wednesday evening at the home of Mrs. Helen Henderson for the June meet- ing. The program was in charge of the Educational and Cultural Activities Commit- tee. The program was taken by Mrs. G. Cathcart who spoke on 'The Search for the White Marigold.' Plans were made for the ladies to spend part of a week at the Couroux cottage on Lake Kushog early in July. Lunch was provided by Mrs. W.H. Foster. The first Kendal Brownie Pack and leaders, Mrs. D. MacDonald, Gail Youngman and Mrs. D. Langstaff, also Brownie mothers, sisters and brothers went by bus to Toronto Metro Zoo Wednes- day, June 16th. On the way back they stopped at Mac- Donalds in Whitby for supper. The day was damp but not their spirits, a grand time was had by all. Next Wednesday , after school the Brownies are 1,invited to Mrs. T. Carletons d for swimming and a barbeque. This will be our last get together until September 8th. At church on Sunday morn- ing Rev. Roland Hopkins of IBowmanville was the guest Ispeaker in the absence of Rev. *Montgomery who was in St. ;Rose, Quebe, assisting with the final service of a church where he once preached, being closed. Next Sunday will be Rev. Montgomery's last service in Kendal before his retirement. A full bus load of members of the Couples Club and some others journeyed to Kitchener on Saturday, June 19th. The first stop was at the Kitchener Farmers Market. In the afternoon all visited Doone Pioneer Village, then back into Kitchener for dinner before heading home. It was an enjoyable day despite rain in the forenoon. With Mr. and Mrs. Keith Wood on the weekend were Dr. and Mrs. Sherwin, formerly of Orono. On Sat. they all attended graduation and award ceremonies at the Royal Agriculture College in Guelph. Mrs. Verna Anderson of Ottawa spent the weekend with their cousins, Mr. and Mrs. R. Elliott, also visiting other relatives including Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Reid, Orono; Mr. and Mrs. G. Cathcart and Arthur Thompson. Rev. and Mrs. Montgomery were dinner guests with Miss Catherine Stewart one day last week. Dr. and Mrs. J. Jansen of Scarborough spent the week- end at their country home north of Kendal. Betty will now be entered in the Sweetheart of the Fair contest at the C.N.E. in Toronto. Bethany Bantam Boys beat their counterparts in Cavan 10-3 this week. Miss Karen Anderson, St. Thomas, Ont., is visiting with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Preston, this week. Reeve George Neals and his wife, Mae, were guests of Warden Ted Shea at the, Centennial Ball held in the Bobcaygeon Community Centre on Saturday evening. The majority of celebrants were dressed in period costumes with approximately 650 persons participating. On Saturday, the Guild of St. Paul's is planning another bake sale but with a twist this time. It's to be an orders only bake sale so watch for the posters and flyers and order early. Mr. Robert Kerr is a patient in Civic Hospital, Peterbor- ough. We wish him a speedy recovery. The Bethany Women's Insti- tute went to the Victoria County Museum and the Art Gallery after enjoying'a picnic lunch at the motor park on Lindsay Street. These two tours were part of the ladies regular June meeting and were enjoyed by everyone. Mr. Bill Sheen recently went on a bus trip that took him to Ottawa and Montreal and home again. Mr. and Mrs. H. Preston's 60th Anniversary Centerpieces and baskets of Deonies decorated the Pnrish Hall, Bethany, on Saturday evening, June 12th, for the reception and dance given in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Preston's 60th anniversary by their family - Ralph, Charles, Clifford, David, Glen, Mere- dith, Barry, and Kenneth, all of Bethany and Winnifred (Mrs. Chuck Adams) Grand Prairie, Texas; Joan (Mrs. Floyd Peters), Odessa, Ont. and Marion (Mrs. H. Mad- dock), Nebraska and their wives and husbands. In attendance were the bride and groom of 60 years, grandchildren, great-grand- children, brothers and sisters and other relatives, friends and neighbours. During a short program, Mr. Ralph Preston performed two vocal renditions with Miss Patti Preston at the piano and was followed by sister, Joan, and Mr. Chuck Adams who spoke words of praise for their parents and in-laws. Mrs. Gordon Strong read a witty and poetic address in honour of the happy couple. Along with the many gifts and cards given to Mr. and Mrs. Preston were plaques from Mr. Pierre Trudeau, Mr. John Eakins, MPP, and County of Victoria and a beautiful color television set from the family. A very bounteous lunch followed after which dancing continued with music by D.J. Walter Hafeli. People once thought that gold could be dissolved in dew. Edito
