4The Canadian Statesman. Bowmaniville. June 29, 1976 W rong Figures A story appearing in The Statesman iast week said that the salaries for clerical work- ers in a new contract with the town had risen from $5,400 ta $7,700. Actually, the new contract gives the clericai workers raises ranging between eight and 10 per cent. This means that the average wage-for a clerîcal worker wouid in- crease from $6,100 in the old contract to $7,000 in the new one., Letter to the Editor, To The Editor: I recently entered a Domin- ion store ta purchase a few emergency items and had only a family Aiiowance cheque with me. It being a Tuesday, 1 assumed my errand would take less than five minutes. There was a lineup of about a dozen shoppers, most of them with very few items in their carts. There was one cashier in sight. There was a desk with an overhead sign, "Cheque Appraval". 1 couid not reach it for the pileup, of empty shopping carts, nat that there was anyone there toa aunrove my cheque, anyhaw. Sa I reentered the lineup now shortened by the arrivai of 'a second cashier. Upon handing over my cheque, 1 was told that it was store paiicy ta have a "Domin- ion number" which meant giving my name, phone number, address, social insur- ance number, driver's icense number (I can't afford a car), and my husband's occupation. (I remember the woman of bible fame, wvho said she had many husbands, being toid ta "go and sin no more".) I said 1 had no husband, I was a weifare bum. Then I was advised that it was aiso store poiicy_ to require cheque users to spend ten per cent of the amount of the cheque on purchase's in the store. I quickiy added up the total and took a packet of chewing gumn to-round out the ten per cent. Glory be! I had omitted the sales tax in my caiculations and was not required to buy the gum. My food money might yet last to the end of the week! Il smiled up at the wall-to- wali sign i two-foot block letters, which read, "You Can Depend On Us!" 1 apoiogized to the innocent sale clerk for my rudeness and lef t the store. On the way hom-e, I thought with affection of the IGA store dloser ta home where 1 usuaiiy shopped. It would seem like, home after this adventure inoai the unknown. There 1 couid walk in and be welcomed as a neighbour, no matter how few staff there were or how busy they were. My many cheques were' cashed imfmediately, even though they sometimes bounced. In such a case, I wouid go ta the store and ask them ta hold it until some money came in. There was a feeling of trust; I neyer feit belittled or undignified. No doubt progress is good for us aIl. But 1 think a redefinition of that word bears consideration. Or perhaps I am a troublemaker at heart. Say what you wili about the negative aspects of smali towns - I stili like a store that can retain its smnall town famîliarity and humaneness!
