irle Des troys NVewtonville Store Sid Brown, Newtonville store- keeper for more than 25 years, celebrated his 65th birthday yester- day with no intention of retiring, but fate stepped in and burned his store to the ground early tig morning, probably forcing him to quit work. The fire, according to nearby neighbors, began with an explosion and within a short time, the entire brick structure was ablaze. Fire- men f rom Newcastle Village were called and in turn sent for help from Bowmanville. In spite of their best efforts, there was no way the tinder dry structure and contents could be saved. Fortunately, they were able to keep it from spreading to a house only a few feet to the west. Firemen were on the scene for several hours, with tankers bring- ing in fresh supplies of water on a regular basis from the hydrants in Newcastle. The store was. operated for many years by the Lane family before Mr. Brown purchased it. Lt was also the post office until a separate federal building was bujît during the period when Russell C. Honey was the Member of Parliament for this area.
