623-33O3ý FLASHBACK 25 Years Ago - Bowmanville Tennis Club picked up four more points at Lindsay, in the Kawartha Tennis. League. Norah Allun defeated Marj DeGroat in the ladies single, AI Witherspoon defeated Ches. Richmond in the men's singles. AI Witherspoon and Bob Steven's defeated Rhys Williams and Cy Ainsworth, Ev. Dunn and Lorraine Dewell defeated Hilda Davidson and Edna Ainsworth. FLASHBACK - 10 Years Ago - Overali girls' champions at Maple Grove East Sehool Field Day were Laurie Preece, Debl4ie Honess and Kathy Budai with 14 points eaéh. Linda Car- penter and Jo Preece with 12 points each. Over- ail boys' champions were Terry Russell with 13 points, Larry McDonald and James DeJong with 12 points each. NO WORD ON PLAYOFFS - Locke's TV Electrons at the moment have yet to receive word when the playoffs begin. Over the weekend, they were defeated by Kendal Eagiles on Saturday 5-0 and Ajax squeezed out an 877 win over them on Sunday. FINALS BANTAM SOCCER - On Saturday, the finals games of the Recreation Soccer League for the Bowmanville -Troiphy- and Tyrone Byam's Plumbing and Heating Cup will be held this Saturday afternoon at the Pine Ridge Sehool field, starting at 1 pïm.,This will wind up a most successful summer season. A good crowd of spectators would he welcome. OSHAWA RINK'WINS - Bowmanville's Lawn Bowling Club has made great improvements this year at the headquarters on Queen St. and memberships are still coming up,' but there is still room for more. On Wednesday, they held their annual doubles tournament for the Luther B. Nichols trophy and had a great turn out. An Oshawa rink of Gord Terwillegar and Tim Nelson had the highest score to capture the coveted trophy. No doubt some of the local bowlers will be competing today for the General Motors Gold Cup at Oshawa Lawn Bowling Club with 64 rinks participating. NEW BALL CLUB - Many comments have been forthcoming about the namne chosen for, Toronto's new prof essional baseball club, most of them not too thrilled. The Blue Jays seems a rather peculiar namne for a bail team but with Labatts being the firm that foots most of the bis, it's understandable that they would want to have the name of one of their products in there somewhere, even if the message is a bit subtie. Remember the fun and caustic com- ments around here when Brookdale Nurseries sponsored our.bail team and Norm Scott de- cided to calthem the Brookdale Roses. If the Blue Jays do as good a job of playing bail in their competition as the Brookdale Roses' did, there won't be too many complaints. SHORT SEASON - At the moment, things aren't looking too hopeful for the youngsters and 'older hockey players who are hoping to start early on ice in local arenas. The Darlington Sports, Centre appears to be the only one that will be opening early and it could be crowded and operating 24 hours every day as -the teams prepare for competition. That kind7-of intensive operation could resuit in breakdowns f rom overworked equipment but we'Il have to wait and see while hoping for the best. TRAINING- for the Junior C Red Eagles hockey team starts Tuesday, August 24th at 7:30 at the Bowmanviile Pineridge School, with track and swimming sessions. Anyone inter- ested in playing for the Eagles should turn out for training-. Everyone welcome. CONGRATULATIONS - to the committee, in charge of, obtaining lights for the Orono park, enablingtennis buffs and baîl teams to play in the evening. Port Hope and Orono are the only parks who have lights for hard-baîl games in the area. t Solina Leads Tyrone in Girls Softball Finals your money's worth in action and excitement.- Street Stpck Resuits lst Heat - 1.
