FLASHBACK - 25 Years Ago - On Monday, Salem won the second straight game of their semi-final play-offs with Maple Grove 6-4. On Friday Salem at Maple Grove 10-5 with Joan Craig the winning pitcher in both games. FLASHBACK - 10 Years Ago - Solina Senior Soccer team won their first game of the season on Saturday in the Danlington Soccer league. Five top scorers in the league are L. Nemis, Zion, 9; Ray Preston, Maple Grove, 8; W. Walroff, Hampton, 6; P. Luzenburg, Courtice, 5;,G. Dallas, Hampton, 5. GREAT SUCCESS - The Recreation soccer finals were held on Saturday at Pine Ridge school's field with Tyrone winning the junior thampionshipover Mastrangelo Developments of Bowmanville in a lengthy playoffbattie that concluded with goal kicks telling the tale. In the senior ioop, Newcastle's S & R won over Orono. Recreation Director Bud Fanning commented that this league has grown- by -leaps and bounds from only, a few players to several hundred participating. It looks as though soccer is certainly staging a big comeback in this area after several years when it was' almost extinet arnong the Youngsters. We haven't heard, the' latest results' from the Darlington Senior and Junior leagues who are now in their playoffs, but their up-to-date resuits may corne in before press time. SOFTBALL PLAYOFFS- Down Memorial Park way, the Town League men's playoffs got underway on Thursday with the second games played last night. Both series should produce some excellent ball. We were on hand for the first game last Thursday when Frank's Variety scored a few runs early in the game and held on to win 5 to 3, over Tim's Rent-AII. It was a superb game with excellent pitching and field- ing. Tim's were threatening alI the way and had scoring chances in most of the late innings, but great fielding by Frank's prevented them from sconing. READY FOR BOWLING - Gradually the teams are being selected for a big season at Liberty Bowl that will get underway early in September. No doubt AI Osborne, has the alleys groomed and set for another busy season. Some of the leagues have already sent in the lists of teams and no doubt more will be coming in as opening dates approach. SUPER PLAYGROUND - if you are ta 'king your youngsters to the CNE, don't miss the opportunity of putting in some time at the child- ren's playground over at Ontario Place. Your admission to the Ex will allow you into Ontario Place where-children up to 13 years of age will be able to spend hours having fun playing al the games tbere. Not a bad idea,,to take a bath- ing suit along for them because some of the games involved water. Don't miss it if you are up that way, the place is fascinating. NATIONAL TRAINING CAMP - Canada's top figure skaters and coaches have been invited to national training camps in Vancouver and Long, Ontario this summer, including two skaters from this area, Andrea Derby of Bowmanville and Stanley Tisnovsky of Newcastle. They'1l be going to the University of Western Ontario, August 23 - 28th. The program is funded jointly by t he Canadian Figure Skating Assn. and the federal government. PANTHERS MANAGER - The Kinsmen Club of Port Hope has announced the re-appoint- ment of Andy McLaughlin as manager of the Port Hope Panther hockey club for this season. An announcement of, coaching staff will be, made this week. They expect to be on the ice early at Peter Campbell arena with the tryouts starting early in September. No word has come in concerning the pre-season training sessions for the, Bowmanville Eagles at Pine Ridge School gym but we should hear more very shortly. Probably they are hoping for ice time at Darlington Sports Centre if there still 'are complications and repairs going on at Bow- manville that may hold up the installation of ice here. Out of My Way, Says Big Jim,i I'm Coming Throughl1 On Thursday night at Memorial Park, big Jim Burtch pounded a two-run homer for Tim's Rent-All and charged around the' bases like a Sherman tank. But, his supreme effort was not enough, his team only scored one more run during the game to lose 5-3 to Frank's Variety in the opening -game of the semi-finals of the Men's League. These two, photos show him rounding third and heading for home. Site phens, Franks Lead in 'Men's -Softball Sem i-Final by Dave Passant Thursday, Aug. 19 Tim's 3 Frank's 5 First place finishing Frank's Variety scored four runs in the opening three innings to take a one game advantage in Town League Softball action at Memorial Park. Bill Cochrane (1-0) aidedhis own cause with a double. Paul Forsey had two hits for Frank's, while Jim Beam, Bob Tugwood, Bruce Adams, Harvey Webster and Peter Rupke had singles. Dick Stata went the distance on the mound for Tim's. Jim Burtch (2 run-homer), Randy Dono- ghue, Dick Stata and Paul Thiessen had two hits apiece for Tim's and Paul Mclntyre counted one safety. Stephen's 4 Krampls 3 Defendin-g champion Stephen's Fuels came back from a 2-run deficit to take a 1-0 lead in their best 3 of 5 series. Terry Baker was the winning pitcher and tied the score at 2 with a 2-rua homer in the 2nd inning. Ed Ryor- chuk and Fred Schat stroked a pair of safeties for Stephen's. Ron Rowntree and Jim Me- Nicol added other hits. Neil Fry was 3 for 3 at the plate for Kramp's. Ken Ferris <home run), Rick Woolner and Joe Caruana had other hits. Den- nis Bickle pitched the entire game for Krampl's. 1 Motorcyclist Shows'Greut Stamina in Westgate Leap by D. Nesbitt An attempt to jump over 10 cars with a motorcycle was made at Westgate on Satur- day night by Karel Soucek and though he failed he deserved much applause for his great stamnina to even try. such a daring feat. With not much straightway for Karel to wind up his bike's. engine and the fact that he did not hit the ramp squareiy and when he did start to go up it a hole was punctured into it were al factors which contributed to his defeat. Jack Yelland (Dodge, man) who drives car number 43 was injured in the Late Model division when he lost a wheel and went right through num- ber one corner and into, the fence. He was rushed by the track's ambulance to the hospital and at this timne his injuries are unknown but we ail hope he'll be back real soon and that any injury was flot serlous., Marie Lapointe of Peterbor- ough was the winner of the Powder Puff held this week and drove a real nice rac e and received a trophy plus monies for her achievemnent. An extra division of Street Stocks from Pinecrest are now in the running at Westgate and because they are more souped up than the regular Street Stockers at the track are classed as a separate feature on the program. Ia this division which man one heat car number 3 was the wîaaer out of six cars. There is an e*pectaacy of more being out for competition next week. Hard feelings and spiteful actons on the track are very notable to the fans (who, by the way love evîery moment of it) as certain drivers are out to get each other in the Late Model Division and in some cases succeed which was apparent. Fans also, enjoy the hassle in the pit area when drivers and mechanics are disputinig. What ever happen- ed to the good old days of clean aggressîve driving and sports- manship? Vera McGill of Oshawa received the trophy donated by Security Recyclîng Limnited of Newcastle when he won the checkered flag in the Street Stock Trophy Dash. The Late Models did' not have a trophy race 'probably due to the number of cars in attendance in that division now. Late Model iResults: lst Heat -, 1. Greg Johnson, Peterborough, 2. Vern McGili, Oshawa, 3. Bob Delpellaro, Peterborough. 2nd Heat - 1. Ray McGill, Lindsay, 2., Doug Ketcheson, Peterborough, 3. Gary Downer, Peterborough. Feature - 1. Vern McGill, 2. Greg Johnson, 3. Marty Mc- Clellan, Bowmanville. SLate Model Division:- lst Heat - 1. Gord Wallace, Peterborough, 2. Roy Gaynor, Pontypool, 3. Ray Brickell, Oshawa. 2nd Heat - 1. Lloyd Howard, Maple, 2. Larry Foubert, Toronto, 3. BilRice, Peterborough. Last Chance - 1. Doug Warnes, Toronto, 2. Carl Fuller, Whitby, 3. Walter Henderson, Orono. Feature - 1. Doug Warnes, 2. Gord Wallace, 3. Roy Gaynor. There was also another exciting Demolition Race held this week and in two weeks time you can plan on another one. What with the Pinecrest fellows now competing at our track the points for the Late Model Division have been Icalled to a hait -thus ieaving Gord Wallace the 1976 Champ- ion. of the Points Award. The $3328 -(Lic. and Sales Tax Extra) BRAND NEW 1976 Aa dia nl by Pontiac COWAN Pontiac-Buick LTD. BOWMANVILLE, ONT. ýTeI. 623-33961 Street Stock points are carry- ing on until September llth. SIt was also noted this week that due to the new cars the regular Westgate, cars are now having less heats which la my opinion seems unfair and after taiking to quite a few of the drivers of both divisions to find they feel the same way. tThe regulars have carried the 1track program upuntil aow >and should be given some >consideration. Less racing, less money for'the competi- tors. LIBERTY BELLES BOWLING SCHEDULE Starts Tuesday, Sept. .7th, 1:30 Teams for First Schedule Team No. 1 - Capt. NWCASTLE KA NE N e uwi ONTARIO SUMMER GAMES - Hundreds of Ontario athietes will be participating in the Ontario Games to be held in the Ottawa - Carleton region on Sept. 4, 5 and 6. Unfortunat.ely, the list doesn't appear to list anyone from this area. A wide variety of events are included. SALMON HUNT - Pictures of young fisher- men who have caught 10 lb. or langer salmon in Lake Ontario have been appearing in the daily papers, but so far no reports of any such catch- es have been reported in this area. We did see about four young anglers trying out their luck at the harbor in Bowmanville early Sunday morning but there was no sign of any fish dangling from their uines. Apparently, the salmon hunt got underway on Aug. 2lst, with pnizes totalling $16,000, so it might be worth-, while to head out into the lake and try to land a big one, just in case one of those 120,000 coho salmon smelts they put into the Credit River in 15,happened to stray down this way. HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANGELA- Angela Kondrak of Toronto celebrated lier l7th birtji- day by beating Lake Ontario last weekend after two earlier defeats. Her, time was about 24 hours from Niagara-on-the Lake to Ontario Place. Now, she's hoping to have a try at the English Channel, possiby next year. Three others plan the saine ordeal this week, but Angela is the first to make it this year.
