For about 181 arenas in Ontario that have been closed because of structural defects, up to 75 per cent of repair costs will be covered by Queen's Park. And under the new fundîng system, the remaining 25 per cent would have to be raised by community groups or municipalities, either through cash or donated labor and materials. The increfasc- in aid is ai 25 per cent improvement over aid for arenas in southern and western Ontario announced in June, and the extra financial help has heen,,given cabinet approval. The labor minister said she is optimistic that ail but the most drarnatically unsafe buildings could be monitored and kept open. 11 However, it is estimated by the labor ministry that be- tween 100 and 200 arenas will be deemed too costly to repair, and tomn down. But the decision to repair or demolish will be left in the hands of municipal councils, according to the minister.
