4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, September 8, 1976 Letters to The Editor 69 Queen Street Bowmanville, Ont. Aug. 23, '76 Protests Dog Bylaw Dear Sr. I arn writing to complain about by-law number 76-40., For the p ast eight years I have owned more than one dog in the town of Bowmanville. the back half of the property at my residence is rented for a nursery, but I ar neft allowed a kennel licence because of zoning. 1 do not wish and can not afford to be overrun with dogs!',But 1 do not feel it is fair toehave to pay these prices for licences. I arn a member, of the Canadian Kennel Club, with the C.K.C. registered kennel name "Mangden". 1 have not; and do not intend my dogs to become a nuisance to the town and to my neighbours. 'During the past eight years, 1 have bred two litters, with this record you can see 1 arn not flooding the market with unwanted puppies! To each dog I keep and each litter I breed, 1 give a lot of attention, thought and planning. I have imported rny dogs from California and for the two litters the fernales were sent to California for breed- ing. They are trained and shown. It is a hobby 1 love dearly; but, it also takes a great deal of my time, not to mention money. Excluding these reasons, I would net let my dogs ýrun loose or be an annoyance because I care for them and would not endanger their lives. I have taken my dogs to public schools in Orono, New- castie and Newtonville to give demonstrations to pronote obedience training and how to be a good "pet owning" neighbour. These are also the aims of our obedience classes. I don't feel I should be punished, or others like me, for the carelessness of uncar- ing pet owners. I feel the by-law should be arnended to cover people in my position. I felt that the by-law was passed in a hurry without any investigation or thought into the matter. My suggestion - instead of the high fees, have a scale of "heavy " fines for first and second offenses. That would control the dog owners Who are in the wrong and Protect others. Ruth Miller Steal Wedding Cake Top Dear Sir: 1 wonder if 1 might take advantage of your newspaper to report an act of vandalism which otherwise would go unreported. On Saturday, Aug. 28, 1976 our daughter was married in Newcastle. The reception was held at the Town Hall. Our daughter had proudly taken her wedding cake to the hall on Frîday. It was beautiful and manv hours of work by Mrs. Hoy of Kendal had beep put into it. You can imagine our daugh- ter's heartbreak when she was called on Saturday morning Sand informed that some per- son or persons had broken into the hall and relieved her cake of the top layer and cake top. The keepsakes we would like to have kept aregone now. But wîth *so many thanks. to' Marge Caswell and Mrs. Lake, who'.I1would-imagine spent most of their Saturday making a substitute layer, the cake looked beautiful again. The kindness of these people Vand others who offered help certainly helped defray some of the bitterness felt towards these intruders. I can only hope that ail brides will keep their cakes secure until the Surviving are his wife ~Evelyn, a daughter Maxine (Mrs. Donald Hendry), onie Zgrandaughter, a sister, Arvil- _ a Strong, Salem, two brothers 'George, Tyrone and David, :Bowmanviile.
