Ope Ne Fire station ut ewcustie Councillor Ann Cowman, Chairman of the Community and Social Services Committee was Master of Ceremonies for the Official Opening at the Hall. The Official Opening of Fire Station 2 in the Village of Newcastle began at noon on Saturday with a delicious luncheon in Brownsville Com- njunity Centre with about 100 guests including civic of- ficials, firemen and other guests. A.F.S. Caterers from Orono provided the luncheon. Later, the group adjourned to the fire station where a large number of fire vehicles had been assembled for a parade that began at the public school. It wound its way through the village with sirens blaring and smoke pouring from an old shed aboard a trailer to add a touch of realism. Couneillor Ann Cowman, Chairman of the Town of Newcastle's Community and Social Services Committee was in charge of the program arrangements, the first event of this kind that she had ever organized. She called on the Rev. David Spivey of Newcastle United Church for the dedication and followed with her opening remarks of welcome and introduction of the Consul- tants, John Hubicki of Totten, Sims, Hubicki Associates, E. Vierbout Construction Ltd., Colliss Electric Ltd., Harvey Partner Ltd., Plumbing and Heating; Overhead Door Co., Oshawa; Murray Paterson of Toms and Sons Ltd.. and Plasterer Dick DeWith. She also introduced the members of council and other special guests. She also paid great tribute to members of the Newcastle Village Department who had spent many hours of volunteer labor on the hall. Mayor Garnet Rickard also commended the firemen and those who had participated in the restoration of the building to make it one of the finest facilities in the area. He praised the dedication that the firemen showed over the years and also mentioned former Newcastle Reeve Cecil Carveth who was present and had been instrumental in obtaining the village's first fire pumper. A special plaque was unveil- ed including the names of council members, along with a special tribute to local fire- men for their part in making the project possible. It was unveiled by Councillors Ken Lyali and Kirk Entwisle. Mayor Rickard invited Mr. Carveth and two long term members of Newcastle's bri- gade to participa te wx ith hlm in the official ribbon cutting ceremony. Former fireman Lawrence Gaines and Harold Couch who is still a member, held the ribbon while Mayor Rickard did the smpping. Their first game was on Saturday when they defeated Toronto Redmen -i-3. The Sunday game saw some good plays and few heavy hits, as the final score came to r Oshawa opened the scoring 7 minutes in the game, then shortly later the Toros began their assault.
