(Save the Environment from Atomic Pollution) meeting held in Newtonville and the debate regarding Eldorado Nuclear Limited's proposais for the Port Grandby area, Mr. Garnet Rickard stated "It was a motion of CO cil1or Lyall that the NewcastlE own Council take no action r gard- ing Eldorado." As a taxpayer living in the area, this statement of Mr. Rickard intrigued me and having property very close to the proposed dump in Port Granbyý, 1 went tbrough the files to see what I could find relating to Mr. Rickard's statement. The reason I was intrigued witb Mr. Rickard's statement was the fact that Mr. Rickard made the implication, that if his statement was true, Councillor Lyall bad been responsible for some form of evil doings. This was ail the more interesting when you consider that Mr. Rickard, with some pride, pointed to the fact the HE (Mr. Rickard) had been responsible for freezing the Port Granby area from Eldorado by putting it into a special study area. This whoie Eldorado ques- tion of expanding the, Port Granby 28 acre dump to a 650 acre Nuclear facility was first brougbt to the pubic's mind in May 1976 wben "Councillor Entwisie advised council that Eldorado Nuclear bas several conditional offers to purchase land at the present site at Port Granby. " This statement was foilowed by Resolution C-76-521. Moved by Councillor Entwisle se- conded by Councilior Cow- man:* "That this Council request that Eldorado be encouraged to consider the feasibility of building a new production faciiity on lands wbich El- dorado now controls in the Soutb East corner of this BROWNING LEVER ACTION HIGH POWER du308 Rif le Sugg. Councillor Lyal pointed out repeatediy that this motion was a controver- sial issue and required mucb more study and information prior to any council action. Facts and history have proven Councillor Lyall more than correct in his predictions. It bas become a very contro- versiai issue and one wbich may weii decide the political future of several candidates for office on December 6. In my study of the files I have not found one motion which wouild support Mr. Rickard's dlaim or implica- tion. To accuse or imply tbat Councillor Lyail is responsibie for the potentiai nuclear nigbtmare in Port Granby is politicaily foolisb and certain- ly contrary to the facts and truth of the matter. Mr. Rickard wouid bave been la a much better position if be had given credit to Mr. Lyall for bis foresight into tbis matter and than bad tried to take some of the credit for bimself tôo.
