WIPE, OUT CURLING - It is ui0derstood that members of the Curling Section of Bowman- ville Country Club have received letters notify- ing themn that an insufficient number of curlers have registered for this year. A minimum of 225 was required to operate the curling section, but unfortuately only about 120 have indicated they wish to curi, 50 it appears there will be no curling here this year. BOWLING ENDS FOR YEAR- After a most successful season of lawn bowling the club bas officially concluded its activities for 1976. Many improvemnents were miade thi s year and new members added to the rolîs. Congratulations to tbis, year's executive wbo bave merited 'and received re-election for next season. Tbey bave certainly put a consideyable amnount of effort and entbusiamns into tbe club and it apparently is paying off. Preston the Mover Atoms Lose Opening Preston the Mover Major Atom Toros travelled to Ajax on Tuesday, Oct.5 for their first exhibition game of the 1976-77 season. Ajax scored two unassisted goa1s in the -first period to take a 2-0 lead. At 2:19 of the second period Jay Sweet opened the scoring for the Toros with a goal from Wayne Mutton. Ajax retaliat- ed with another goal to go ahead 3-1. Two scoring pînys by Bowmanville in the last period resulted in a 3-3 tie.' Robert Geidlinger assisted by Ray Cummings and Gordie Rogers, and Chuck Nash assisted by Danny Weir and Deryk Clark were the other Toro marksmen. Goaltending League Game- duties were shared by George Kennett and Jon Rowe. On Wednesday, Oct. 6 the Major Atom Toros journeyed to Bay Ridges for their league opener. Bay Ridges scored twice la the first period and once in the second period before Bowmanville hit the score board on a goal by Kelly Matthews assisted by Danny Weir. Bay Ridges scored a third goal in this period. The Toros came back in the last period to tie the score. Jay Sweet scoredtwice, the first assisted by Chris Michelson and Wayne Mutton; the se-, cond by Michelson and Scott Heard. The tying goal was shot by Robert Geidlinger H. L. "AA" called the Red Wings. This was another hard hitting, fast moving game, which spw Toros gain a 2-0 lead , then Red Wings scored two, This game from Gordie Rogers. With 1: 59 left to play in the game Bay i Ridges scored to take the lead and win the game. The assist on his third goal went to Geidlinger. Bowmanville's fourth goal was an unassisted goal by Kelly Matthews. On Oct. 7, Cumming's Toros opened league play in Picker- ing against Bay Ridges. This was a good, fast game in which Toros scored first, then Ridges scored three to lead 3-1 in the middle of the second period. Toros then went to work and scored five goals ln a .row. Ridges nieyer quit and scored two more to set up an exciting finish, when they pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. Toros held on under one-sided score, Tbey are sbown bere doing an effective job of blocking at the line. This week, tbey will play a powerful team from Ajax. This was a penalty filled game wich produced a good passinig and scoring attack by' Toros. Scoring for Toros were Chuck Welsh two goals, sin- gles to Kev Noble, Neil Jones, Terry Riggers and Rick Simp- son. 'pencer's Major Midgets Nin League Opener But Lose in Exhibition Tilt On Wednesday evening the roros played their first league game against Bay Ridges and were the victors by a 2-1 score. Throughout the game there were many penalties which totaled 36 minutes in penal- lies. Bowmanville opened the scoring on excellently execut- ed passing play by Gary )usseldorp, Brad Godfrey and finally Paul Reid, who scored. Impressive A4jax iTeam Downs D&R Sports in lst Atom League Game The Bowmanvjhle D and R. Sports Minor Atom Toros' were defeated in their first O.M.H.A. League game on Saturday by a very impres- sive Ajax hockey team. Bowmanville's team cap- tain Lorne Whitmarsh opened the scoring in the game when he made a solo rush the full iength of the ice to score a beautiful goal. There was no scoring until the middle period when Ajax tied the score wbile the Toros were playing a m~an short. In the final period, Ajax scored the game winner on a nice play. The visitors dis- played a very good skating game, and they just didn't give up. Bowmanville put on quite a show in the first two periods bombarding the Ajax goalie with many shots, but he was equal to the task. Richard Smith was in goal for the Toros and was very steady, making several diffi- cult stops. Bowmanville's next game will bie in Bowmanville Me- morial Arena on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. when Lindsay will pay a visit. Lawn Bowler s Finish Season 'the weather washed out the lawn bowlers recent final Fun Day, so the annual meeting was held in its spot with about 40 îresent. A good year was report- ed financially and otherwise and plans made for next spring. The members seemed satisfied with the present executive so tbey stand pat for next season. After the meeting, chicker dinners were brought in, on( of the mernbers boiled foui dozen corn (delicious), one ai the lady members baked yard of cake (also delicious) a couple dozen lucky dram' prizes of real and dubiow value were handed out and il was a pretty good wind up tc an excellent year. Two of the executive, Langs and Lunney are currently beading up the CNIB cam- paign. Canvassers. are out covering the area from the town line at Oshawa through to and including the village of Newcastle and north to Black- stock.
