FLASHBACK - 25 Years Ago - John Mason and John Fowler tied for the Intermediate Champion- ship at the Public Schools' Field Day on Wednesday. Pamela Downey and June Quinney tied for Sr. girls; Pat Conway and Elizabeth Watt tied for the intermediate. Wally Larmer was senior champion. FLASHBACK - 10 Years Ago - Ken's Men s Wear swept to their third consecutive play-off win last week thumping Kramp Furniture 10-3. On the mound for Ken's was Bill Nicholson, who registered his third straight win. EACH TUESDAY - on Channel 9 from 7:30 - 8:00, Mary Jane Bradley (nee Oke) is appearing in the "Stars on Ice" program. HOLE-IN-ONE - on September 12th at Bow- manville Country Club, Tom Pearson playing with his partner Bob Marjerrison in a chal- lenge match against Bob Guthrie and Ron Rushak, aced the 3rd hole with a wedge. Tom and Bob were the winners. THREE BIG WINS - Things are looking good for the Port Darlington Marina and Hotel Junior Cs Who are improving every game under Coach Bill Cosburn's tutelage. The only time they've been defeated this year was against Port Hope when they were short of players. Last week's three game win against Frankford, Stouffville and Lindsay was impressive, but the best part of it all is that there has been no squabbling and everybody seems to be giving out to capacity. Let's keep it going and the crowds should continue to increase. Best wishes for a quick recovery and return go to goalie Bob Koczulab who was cut for 10 stitches over the eye in one of those games. LOVE THOSE REDS - As this is being writ- ten, the Cincinnati Reds have won two games in the World Series over the New York Yankees and, unless they fade on Tuesday should sweep the series. Both games to date have been close ones with the Reds winning in the bottom of the ninth. They do seem to come through when the runs are needed. HARRIERS MEET - Today, elementary school pupils will participate in a Harriers (cross country) meet taking place in the area of the former Cold Springs Camp, north-east of Kendal. The events will include junior boys and girls and senior boys and girls. If the weather is unsuitable, the meet will be held on Thursday, Oct. 21st. Bob Prole of The Pines Senior Public School is convenor of the meet. ARENAS FUNCTIONING - Now that repairs are underway on area arenas to make them functional at least for this year, young hockey players will be able to make plans for the win- ter season. Already, most of the hockey leagues are underway, just a bit later than usual, but prospects for the season are certainly much brighter than they were a few weeks ago when three area arenas were threatened with clo- sure. In the meantime, about all that has been done is to delay the inevitable for a year, at least with the Newcastle and Orono arenas. Hindsight is easier than foresight, but wouldn't it have been great if plans for a twin-pad arena and sports complex on the property west of the Pine Ridge School had been explored and deve- loped. Such a structure would have serviced a wide area, but it probably is too late to revive it now. DUPLICATE - Bridge winners Tuesday, October 12th were (1) Gail McKnight and Joyce Weekes; (2) Ann Stewart and J. B. Nelson. Games commence at 7:45 and interested persons are welcome. GARY FENTON - of Bowmanville teamed up with Bruce Carrigan of Uplands and pro Paul Kennedy of Maple Downs to capture the STP Match Play pro am golf tournament, on the first sudden-death hole, recently. They were last year's champions and were expected to be quite strong as they only lost about four of last year's players. Bowmanville nearly tied it up in the dying seconds of the game when Rick James caught a long pass and took it Three Big Wins for Marina's As They Down Frankford 4-2, Take Stouffville and It was a big week for the Junior C Port Darlington Marinas as they unleashed their power and catue up with three big wins over Frank- ford, Stouffville and Lindsay to make Coach Bill Cosburn extremely happy with his troops. The Marinas played Frank- ford in Trenton, Wednesday night, skating away with a 4-2 win over the pesky Eastern- ers. Frankford built up a two goal lead early in the game. Boyd Knox narrowed the lead before the end of the first period assists to Joe Humen- ick and Rory Gibbs. Bowmanville came on strong in the second period with goals by Knox, his second, assisted by Humenick and Gibbs. Gary Nemisz put the locals ahead to stay assisted by linemates Gibbs and Knox. Don Spicker closed the scoring a point blast from Paul Albrecht. The Marinas played the second away game for the week Saturday night in Stouf- fville against the team picked by many as the team to beat. The Marinas showed great staying power and were re- warded with by an 8 to 7 win on a fine team effort. First period scorers were Gary Cox from Ted Puk, AI Emard from Ron Strike and Jerry Johnson from Cox and Boyd Knox. Second period scorers were Ron Strike from Cox and Johnson, Ted Puk from Cox and Johnson, then Cox from Don Spicker. Third period scorers were Ted Puk from Cox and Joe Humenick and finally the winner at 14:26 by Ted Puk from Cox and Humenick. Starting goalie Bob Koczulob was nicked for 10 stitches above the eye and was relieved by backup Lenny Chappell. In the Sunday night home game, Lindsay Trent Muskies were the opponents with Lindsay, another of the many teams in the league, caught in a rebuilding year coming out on the short end of a 5 to 2 count. The Muskies tried to make up for inexperience by carry- ing their sticks high most of the game but to no avail. Lenny Chappell was between the pipes for the Eagles with backup Danny Wilcox on loan from Duke Brunt's Juveniles, filling in for the injured Bob Koczulab. Lindsay Bowmanville started slowly which was to be expected after grinding out a tough win the night before but still went on the score board first on a goal by Jerry Johnson assisted by Ward Reddick. Muskies tied the score in the second on bullet drive from the point by Ken Anderson. Bowmanville went ahead on a goal by Ted Puk assists to Boyd Knox and Jerry John- son. Ted Puk got the game winner at 15:40 of the second unassisted. Bowmanville's fourth goal came from Ron Strike who did the tiger rag after beating the Lindsay goalie Dave Jamieson. Lind- say narrowed the score on a goal by John Ingraham. Ward Reddick finished the scoring assisted by Park and Johnson. A new feature of this year's home games is the most valuable Home Player of the game with centre Jerry John- son winning the first edition. On the next play, Dale Milson caught a pass and went the rest of the way, but the officiais called it back, claiming he had touched the sideline at the eight yard mark. That cal back gave the win to Ajax as the Redmen were unable to score on the next and final play of the game. The above photo shows one of the visitor's team making a good rn while leaving two BHS tacklers behind. Bay Ridges opened the scoring at 3:19 of the first period. Then again the Ridges exploded for 6 goals within a 5 minute splurge in the second period. The Toros came close on a couple plays by Kelly Balson and Mark Hickey early in the third period but were unable to flick the light on. Bay Ridges closed the scoring with 2 more goals and protected the goal tender for a convincing victory. The following day, Mary Brown's Toros defeated Osh- awa Black Hawks by edging them 1-0. The Toros played a much better positional hockey game with consistent fore- checking and back checking. The defense squad of Mike Houston, Shawn Rekker, Shawn Martin and Steve Finucan certainly contributed in preserving a shut out for the goal tenders David Smith and Troy Harmer who were very sharp at all times. The forwards Kelly Balson, Mark Hickey, Paul Herron, Chris Beck, Ian Wheelock, Gerry Winsor, Mike Knight and Trevor Zoschke all played two way hockey throughout the game. MacGregor IDA Bantams Off to Slow Start, Losing Cobourg On Saturday, October 9 the MacGregor IDA Bantam Toros played host to the Cobourg Minor Bantams at Darlington Sports Centre and were completely overwhelm- ed by the Cobourg crew by a score of five to one. Dennis Simpson was the only marks- man for the MacGregor, club in this one with Mark Doyle showing strong between the pipes during his stint in the game. When the Toros repaid the visit to the Cobourg arena they were treated to the same skating, passing and checking game and kept off balance again as Cobourg won 5 to 2. Again Simpson scored as well as Dale Broome but the chances were few once again. However, a definite improve- ment was shown by the Toros in this encounter. On Saturday, October 16 they opened their regular schedule at Darlington Arena with a 2 - 2 tie against the Markham Bantams. The IDA boys held a 2 -0 lead until late in the game on goals by Dennis Simpson from Steve Huisman and Tony Clieff and Dale Broome from. Andy Paton and Alan Turney.
