By L. Burns D & R Sports, put together a strong third period, to take the opening game of the Commer- cial League over a new sponser, Cowan Pontiac, Buick by a 6 to 2 decision. The game was scoreless until half way through the second period when Bruce Welsh scored the first goal for Cowans' from Joe Caruana. D R tied the score before the second ended with a tally from James Baker unassisted. The second saw Frank's tie the game with two quick goals from Tim Prout with Bob Hellam and Tom Wilson assisting and Sandy Brown from Bryon Hughes and Gary Wilson. Spencers then took the lead before the second ended with 'Rick Shackelton getting his second goal from Jim Brooks and Bob Harness. The third period saw Frank's tie it again with a tally from Wayne Paedon with Don Rogers and Jim Burtch assisting. With three minutes left, Spencers took the lead again from Jim Brooks,nhis second, from Rolly Simpson and Wray Rendell. With a little over a minute left Frank's charge in to, tie the game for the last time from Bryon Hughes with Gary Wilson and Sandy Brown getting the assists. South Courtice Wins Soceer By Rob Massey South Courtice PublicSchool displayed their soccer skills as they won both the boys and the girls championships in a tournament held Tuesday at M. J. Hobbs Senior Public School. In the boys category, South Co.urtice entered two teams. One team was eliminated in the round-robin play but the other team advanced to the final game after defeating North Courtice 5-0 and Maple Grove 2-0. Their opponents in the final was one of two Hampton Public School teams. The Hampton team had won a berth in the final Tennis Trophy Winners At the first Bowmanville Tennis Club dance at Centennial Hall recently, trophies were presented to the winners for this year. In the top picture, Director Mike Roberts is shown presenting Nancy Jackman with three trophies for winnng the championship for ladies singles, ladies doubles and mixed doubles. Nancy Jackman, the junior representative, presented trophies to Steven Fry, runner up in junior singles and to the champion Ken Waring. following a 1-0 win over Mitchell's Corners and a 2-0 victory over West Courtice. . The final game resulted in a 2-0 win for South Courtice. Jirnmy Meikle scored both South Courtice goals in the first half. The second half was scoreless and most of the play was contained in the mid-field area. In girls action, South Cour- tice defeated Salem and North Courtice by identical 1-0 scores to earn a position in the final. Hampton provided the opposition in this game as the Hampton squad downed Enni- skillen 3-1 and Mitchell's Corners 1-0. South Courtice was victor- ious in the final game by a 2-0 score. The winner of the game was decided in a penalty-shot situation after the teams battled to a scoreless tie after 40 minutes of play. Tracey Quinn and Cathy Cowle scored the goals in the shootout and gave South Courtice the vic- tory. Baker Scores Three D&R Defeats Cowans On Sunday night here, Port Darlington Marinas over- powered Frankford Huskies, skating away with a 6 to 1 win in Junior C action extend their unbeaten home record. The game started at slow pace with Marinas a little rusty around the edges. After a week layoff they gradually gained timing and momentum as the first period went on which they carried into the second period, then complete- ly dominated play in the third period. Frankford scored first, a first period goal, Jim Neron banging in a loose puck assisted by Brad Graham. Marina's goalie Len Chappell then closed the barn door for the eveing with the help of good backchecking and clear- ing by the entire team. Frankford were unable to execute a power play even on two man advantage situations Frank's took control of the game in the second period as they displayed a lot of hussle and pin-point passing. Other sborers for Frank's were Rick Erwin, Darcy Cummings and BillSainsbury. Barry Cullen, Brian Ruddy, Erwin, Sainsbury, Hogarth and Chris Dyck were awarded with one assist each. Mark Lee was the Bowman- ville goaltender. The previous evening, Frank's had scored a 5-0 victory over Cobourg in Co- bourg.
