Secondarygà School Teache-rs Northumberland andNew- castle Secondary School Teacher have ratified a collective agreement with the Board of Education. Sixty per cent of the 435 teachers voted to accept the new contract. Significant gains for the teachers are included in the areas of salary and staffing. A senior teacher-that is, a teach- er with 12 years of teaching experience and the equivalent of five years of university-will be paid at the rate of $25,000 per year. Under last year's contract, teachers at this position on the grid received Men's High Single - Barry Roberts 299, High Triple - Frank Waterfall 792. Top Five Averages - A. Hulland 221, F. Waterfall 205, B. Roberts 204, $23,500. This represents an increase of 6.4 per cent. Ail other secondary school teachers receive this 6.4 per cent increase plus a,3 per cent annual increment which was contained in the previous agreement. A first year teacher with four years of university will earn $11,100. In addition to last year's staffing formula, it was agreed that one Special Edu- cation Teacher shahl be placed in eac secondary sehool. The new contract has no provision for a Cost of Living Clause. Under the previous agreement each teacher re- ceived approximately $157 in COLA payments. This is a saving of about $70,000 te the Board. Allowances for teachers holding positions of responsi- bility will remain as negotiat- ed in the 1975-76 collective agreement.
