My friends tell me that atonies are making the rounds that as Councilior Ken Lyall had resigned from the Town's Planning Advisory Board and that Ken Lyall resigned from the Newcastle Community Hall Board he was an unstable person and unfit to be Mayor of the Town. Here are some facts; Ken Lyall resigned from the Town of Newcastle Planning Advisory Board ln protest against the manner in which the Town9s planning process was squandering hgindreds of thousands of dollars away on the Town's so-calledprocess. For instance, the deficit of the ,Planning Department for 1975 was $142,179. For instance the Orono or Newcastle Durham Senior Citîzens Lodge and the proposed Senior Citizens Apartments in Bowman- ville are no more advanced at chia date than the projeets were many months past due co planning red tape. For instance the Town Councillor appointed to take my place on the Planning Advisory Board also resigned in very few months. Concerning the Newcastle Community Hall Board. Ken Lyall disassociated himself from this Hall Board until the legal question of possible confict of interest was setcled concerning the other members of the Board. When this matter is cleared up I wilI return to sit on the Board as requested by CounciL. Another vicious rumour doing the Town 's rounds was that Ken Lyall was being sued over his stand concerning the Eldorado Nuclear Limited matter. Not so. There is a lawsuit pending in the Newcastle Town Council concerning a municipal officer but Ë that person is not Ken Lyall. Further, it is alleged chat Councillor Lyall instîgated a $50. Town legal fee for a lawyer's opinion to settle a $5 bet between himself and anocher Councillor.- A miserable lie. The' Town of Newcastle has had a problem for several years with the Mickey Mouse tunnel, at Waverley Gardens concerning responsibîlity and maintenance. Following yet another recent complaint it was moved at the next Works Committee meeting by Lyall and seconded by Rickard chat Council obtain a legal opinion as to the responsibillty of the tunnel. The motion had nothing to do with the betting as Garnet Rickard can attest. i had hoped that this electlon could have proceeded under fair play and common sense conditions allowing the electorate to make cheir decision on Election Day based on the platform and record- - -both public. and private--- -of the candidates. It appears however that innuendo and cheap shots will be the order of the day. I deplore this and i will have nothing to do Iwith such sordid actions, depending on the people choosing their Mayor on the basis of common sense, unw ~d by it rcks and gutter politice.
