CANCELLED - it is with great disappointment that Alderman Bruce McArthur and Dick Donald, co-chairman of the World invitational softball tournament, scheduled to be held in 1978 at Durham College, announce that the tour- nament has been cancelled. The decision to withdraw was made by the local committee when they were unable to obtain assurances from the events sanctioning body. The official reason for the uncertainty was over the federal government's actions in banning Taiwan in the Montreal Olympics. Ineluded were the Eastern Ontaro Champion Tykes sponsored by Memorial Park, the Peewees and Bantams sponsored by the Legion, and the Mi ge s sponsored by several merchants, including Jeffery's Superette, Brock's BP, Percy Luxton, Gill's Marina, George Allmond, Bob Beers Plumbing and Lloyd McRobbie Photography. Maxie Yourth was chairman of the event and called on the various officials to present awards and trophies to team members. Hockey Contest To Sngle Out Top Team Players Bowmanville hockey pla3 ers will put their talent on t line in a Minor Hocke Showdown about to get unde way in town. Although the players wi shoot it out with their oppor ents, mothers should sta calm because they will onl: have a hockey stick and puci as weapons. The competition will giv them an opportunity to tes their skills and also t compare their abilities wit others entered in the show down. The contest is open to al minor hockey players in th town for a $2 registration fee It also coverstthe cost of showdown kit that come, complete with posters of NHI and international hocke stars, decals and a crest. Organizers plan to allow y- r- ll n1- y ly e st o h ll e a s parents, friends and local hockey enthusiasts in on the program by having a play-off featuring the players that do best in the competition. Each team in the Bowman- ville Minor Hockey Associa- tion except the novice, club will enter a goalie and two other players in the town champion- ship tournament. At that time about 39 players will compete for the top three spots which allow them to move on to the next level, the regional showdown. The tests themselves will measure such skills as speed skating, stick handling, pass- ing and shooting on the goaltender. Each player will receive points for the test withl the overall resuilts based on a total score obtained by adding up the points. The contest is already with BMHA coaches who are re- sponsible for running it among each team. As the contest goes on, prizes for the best perform- ances at each of the various levels will also be presented. All funds raised from ad- mission charges for the town championships wili go toward the BMHA's ice-time costs.
