Bowmanville, November 10, I9- n Orono Parade and Church Service Marks Remembrance Day on Sunday The people who make the Canadian Red Cross Blood Donor Clinics a success are those who are willing to give as often as possible. Knowing the importance of these dedicated donors, the Red Cross recognizes their service bypresenting them with certificates. With their citations for giving blood on 35 occasions, shown above (le t to right) are George Fayer, John Sikma, Blood Donor Chairman Jim Roughley and Morris Kuipers. Five others from the area will also receive the certificate from the Durham East Branch. Public participation in this year's November clinic at the Bowmanville Lions Centre was above the 1975 record, with 388 people taking part in it. On Sunday morning, the first of several Remembrance services in the area took place at the Cenotaph in Orono, where the pipe band from Branch 178, Bowmanville, Royal Canadian Legion led Legionaires, members of the Ladies Auxiliary, Cubs and Beavers in a short parade, followed by a ehurch service. Newcastle Village will mark Remembrance Day on Thursday, Novenber lth and Bowmanville's service will be held Saturday morning. Place First At Area Harrier Meet Following first place finishes in the Northumberland-Newcastle western area harrier meet on October 21st, 12-year-old Billy Wry and 11-year-old Mandy Huxter of Mitchell's Corners Public School proceeded to the county final on October 27th. Both students did exceptionally well, with Billy capturing fourth spot and Mandy coming fifth in the junior categories of the event. As well as showing the trophies that they won at the area meet, the grade 6 students are modelling two of the 31 brand new team shirts donated to the school by the Mitchell's Corners Home and School Association. To their credit though, Bowmanville fought from be- hind three times to tie the score with markers from Jim Brown, Tom Fowler and Marc Bissonette. Credit must go the steady goaltending of Mark Shackleton who kept the final 4-3 outcome respectable. On Saturday, October 30, at the Hampton Arena, the Toros were home to the visiting Newcastle Minor Midgets. Newcastle has an excellent team and they pushed the Toros to their strongest effort to date. Bowmanville was down 1-0 at the end of the second period and defence- men Tom Fowler and Jim Brown were lost to injuries. In the third period Mike Foster anchored the defence and centremen Kevin Ward and Wayne Whiteman provid- ed a goal each. Goaltender Paul Lavigne was excellent returning to play his first game after a pre season injury. The final 2-2 score was indicative of how closely matched the two teams were. DO IT Do âoi- lTglk PeeWVees On Saturday, Oct. 3oth, Frank's Pee Wees travelled to Ajax. In the first period Ajax got off to a quick start to give them a 2-0 lead. At the 4:00 minute mark of the period Rod Plain got his first of two goals. In the second period, Plain got his second goal assisted by Darcy Cummings to tie the game. At the 3:24 mark of the third period Ajax went ahead again only to have Brian Ruddy from Bill Hogarth and Barry Cullen tie the game up again. Bowmanville had a lot of bad luck around the Ajax goal. They did everything but put the puck in the net. At the 12:34 mark Ajax went ahead 4-3. After this goal the Bowmanville team seemed to sense defeat. D&R Sports Minor At( Outscore Bay Ridges Blank Cobourg Team The Bowmanville D&R Sports Minor Atom Toros picked up a pair of victories in O.M.H.A. Lakeshore League action last week. On Tuesday evening, the Toros travelled to Bay Ridges and handed the host club a 4-1 defeat in an extremely well- played contest. Only 47 sec- onds remained on the clock in the opening stanza when Tom McLaughlin scored for the Toros assisted by his line- mates Brent Neill and Chris Dreossi. In the middle period, Dre- ossi stole the puck off a Bay Ridges defenceman and raced the length of the ice to score the second goal, the eventual winning goal. Bowmanville went three up when Jeff Dawson got one past the goaltender, assisted by Paul Robichaud. Bay Ridges scor- ed on Bowmanville with 43 seconds remaining in the period. Brent Neill scored the final Bowmanville goal at the 14:19 mark of the third period, assisted by his centreman Dreossi. Alan Ulrich was in net for Bowmanville and made several key saves to earn a well deserved victory. Bowmanville was without the services of Brian Heard. On Saturday in Bowman- ville Memorial Arena, the D&R Sports Toros shut-out Cobourg by a convincing 7-0 score. Defenceman Glen Dun- can skated the full length of the ice to score the opening goal for Bowmanville after he was set up byhis defence hms 4 to playing a much improved game, scored a goal, assisted by his linemates Jeff Dawson and Greg Watson. The final goal came off the stick of defenceman Pierre St. Amand, assisted by Brett Blundell and Brad Bamsey. Richard Smith was in the nets for the Toros and played very well to earn the shutout. Bowmanville's next game will be in Bowmanville next Saturday when they host Bay Ridges at 2:00 p.m. Lose by-Goa1 3 Games On Tuesday night Nov. 2nd, the H. L. Wood Toros turned the tables on a surprised Whitby-Brçoklin team that had beaten them a week ago and Bowmanville held a 5-4 lead at end of the second period. In the third the Toros scored first to open the lead tc 6-4 only to be hit by two clean goals and a questionable one to end up on the wrong end of a 7-6 final win for Whitby. Bowmanville goals were scored by Tim Almond from Jon Janack, Doug Dilling from Tim Almond, Tod Hoop- er from Paul Dadson and Doug Dilling, Jon Janack from Mark Mathews and Mark Mathews unassisted. The first period was scoreless with both Paul Adams and the Bay Ridges' goalie making key stops. Bowmanville scored the first two goals in the second, Kent Wilcox from Todd Hoop- er and Tim Almond and Todd Hooper from Tim Almond, and Kevin Welsh followed by a Bay Ridges tally. The Toros were unable to find the mark again and Bay Ridges kept the pressure on to hit for two more to end the game, Bay Ridges three Bowmanville two. Paul Adams did an outstanding job in keeping their score to three. Sunday, Nov. 7 found the Baby Bulls in Lindsay for the first meeting of the two teams. Bowmanville jumped into a two goal lead with goals by Doug Dilling from Jon Janack and Jon Janack from Mark McLean just 15 seconds apart in the first period. Lindsay came back in the second period and scored three scrambly goals before the Transporters tied it up on a shot by Doug Dilling assisted by Todd Hooper and Tim Almond. The third period was full of end to end action with Grant Bradley making a number of key saves until Lindsay shoved one by him for the winner. Lindsay 4, Bowmanville 3. partner Captam Lorne Whit- marsh. Chris Dreossi scored the second goal, assisted by Duncan and Whitmarsh. In the middle stanza, Jeff Dawson scored, assisted by Jon Clieff. Brian Heard, back in action after a layoff due to illness, scored the fourth marker, assisted by Clieff. In the final period, Brent Neill scored a pretty goal, assisted by Dreossi and Dun- can who had a tremendous game on defence.
