Bowmanville November 10, 1976 Section Two Coninttee Receives Engineer 's Report While cigarette commer- cials congratulate women for "coming a long way", doctors are aware of the sad irony behind these advertisements. Medical surveys are beginn- ing to show that women are catching up to men--in lung cancer incidence. As more women are smok- ing, more are developing lung cancer. In the last decade women's death rates have doubled for this type of cancer which previously attacked mostly men. Some researcb- ers say that we are experienc- ing an "epidemic of lung cancer in women" which has not yet peaked and which will continue to increase if women continue to smoke. There is concern over the sharp increase in the number of teenage girls who are smoking. More than 15 per cent of girls between 12 and 18 of age snoke--this is just a fraction under the number of boys in the same age group who smoke. Studies have shown that those who start young tend to smoke heavily, thereby running the greatest risk of contacting diseases related to smoking. Until recently, women have had a false sense of security about the effects of smoking on their health. Studies on smoking showed men as the victims of cigarette-induced cancers. The damage to women bas become apparent more slowly since they haven't smoked as long or as heavily as men and since the effects of smoking don't show up for a number of years after a person is "hooked". But gradually the evidence is coming in that women are also susceptible to the effects of smoking. In addition to lung cancer, women who smoke have a greater chance of developing heart disease, emphysema, cancers of the mouth and larynx, and other serious diseases. Women who smoke have also been found to spend more days sick in bed with less serious ailments and to lose many more work days then women who don't smoke. Studies are also showing that women who smoke may be endangering the health of innocent victims of their FACTORY SPECIALI1 Open to the Public 3 Days Only CLEA RANCE' 0FOVER-RUNS and SECONDS 8"x8" Decorative and Plain Ceramic Tiles 20 Patterns to Choose from Epidemic of Women's DE Small babies frequently7have difficulty getting a good start in life, and their physical and emotional development dur- ing childhood may be affected.
