Veenstra This week features Holland week at the Science Centre. There are displays depîcting various Dutch customs, espe- cially centering around the celebration of Christmas. Like most European coun- tries, Holland celebrates St. Nicholas' birthday on Decem- ber 6. Traditionally St. Nicho- las arrives in full bishop's regalia by steamer from Spain, accompanied by his white horse and Moorish servants. Children leave their shoes by the firephace the evening before, with a carrot or other treat for the horse. Good children find their shoes full of sweets. Naughty child- ren find a small spanking rod as a warning. Gifts are exchanged with humorous poems, custom made by the giver for the occasion. On Sat., Dec. 4, in the Blue Room of the Science Centre, this tradition will be portrayed by the children's choirs of the Ontario Christian Music As- sembly under the direction of ,Mr. Leendert Kooy. They will accompaay a pînyhet of St. Nicholas songs translated by the conductor into English. This will be performed twice, at 1 o'clock and 4:30. Because gif t giving is done on St. Nicholas Day, Decem- ber 25, âctivities concentrate only on the celebration of Jesus' birth. To share in that celebration, the adult and children's choirs will sing a Christmas conert at 2:30, between the two children's, performances. The OCMA band will also play.
