8The Canadian Statesman, Bownanville, December 1. 1976 FLASHBACK - 25 YEARS AGO - Brookdale Roses- were named Ontario Intermediate "A" Basebaîl champions officially at a meeting in Hamilton of the OBA. Seems there was a rhubarb over the entry of Batawa, an entry in the Central Ontario League and not legally able t o contest the OBA playdowns. FLASHBACK - 10 YEARS AGO - The Cour- tice Secondary School Athletic Society Awards went to the otstanding boy athiete, Wayne Jordan, and to the outstanding girl athiete, Sharon weedie, presented at Commencement Exercises on Friday. ORONO ARENA - began its full schedule of activities on Sunday, November 24th following the completion of necessary repairs which were done by volunteer workers. PRESIDENT - of the Bethany Ski club for the coming season is Ken Smith; secretary, Ken Gadd; executive members, Herb Correli, Waddy Waterman, Dave Fanning, Stu Lamers, Mollie and Jim Craig and Ian Blaiklock. Meip Gadd does the bookwork. In charge of racing is Jon Grant. QUESTION - When did Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and St. Louis finally join the select company of the National Hockey League? ANSWER - Contrary to popular belief, the N.H.L. expansion of 1967 'was not the first time that Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and St. Louis had played in the league. The Pirates (Pittsburgh) were a member'between 1925-26 and 1919-30, the Quakers (Philadelphia) played in 1930-31, while the Eagles (St. Louis) skated in the League for the 1934-35 season. DUPLICATE BRIDGE - recent winners were Nov. 16 (1) DavidOrme - Bill Clipperton (2) Molly Mind - Joyce Weekes. Nov. 23 (1) Dr. and Mrs. H. B. Rundie (2) Dr. and Mrs. L. S. Mik- los. SUPER GREY CUP- That certainly was a cliff-hanger of a Grey Cup game on Sunday with Ottawa Rough Riders coming up with a touchdown in the last few seconds to take it from Saskatchewan Rough Riders whohad appeared to have. it all wrapped up. One paper salesman dropped into the office Monday morning, moaning because his youngsters had persuaded him to switch the channels for cartoons with about a minute to go. He heard later that Ottawa had won and couildn't believe it. If disappointed Saskatche- wan fans see the picture in Rhe Toronto Sun of Prim~e Minister whooping it up when Ottawa scored, he'd better watch it or they'll be wanting to separate too. DONNYBROOK - Things apparently got out of control in Port Hope last Thursday when those rugged Frankford'Junior C Huskies tied Port Hope Panthers 7 - 7 in a game that saw both benches and quite a few fans involved in a swinging, battle. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured, more by good luek than any- thing efse. ' Tiose Pànthier fans are certainly packing their arena this year and obviously are right behind their high-flying_ team ..up to now. In Bowmanville, Frankford to date hasn't shown they have a good enough team to tie Port Hope, but could be they have obtained some new aggressive talent, so the Marina Eagles had better be on 'guard next time. APOLOGIES - to those sending in write-ups which have had to be held over. We'l do our best to get them in and remember the ones in the earliest have the better chance of being published. GAMES - The city of Brantford has been selected as the site for the 1977 Ontario Games for the Physically Disabled. The games wil be held June 17 through .20, 1977. An estimated 400 amputee, blind and wheelchair athietes ...Il patiipae n inesprt . Thy ae: r Receive Provincial and County Honors ot Achievemenf Day The auditorium of Bowmanville Hi gh School was a busy place on Nov. 2th when members and leaders from the Durham South area held their annual 4H Homemaking Club Achievement Day, with Home Economist- Mary Tompkins in charge. Several displays were prepared and skits presented, with the highlight of the day bèing the presentation of Provincial and County honors. Provincial honors were awarded to the above, from left to right, Debbie McLaughlin, Janet Parsons, Jennifer Yeo, Mary Cornish, Kathleen Knox, F~aye Langmaid and Donna Hancock. County Honors were awarded to, from lef t to right, Pauline Taylor, Yvonne De Bruin, Nancy De Bruin, Janet Brown, Linda Metcalf, Darlene Lesnick and Amber Taylor. Marinas Give Scoreboard ReaI Workout When They Decimate Uxbridge- 17 toi By Don Wilcox Port Darlington Marina & Hotel Junior C Eagles put the score board lights to the test at the Memorial Arena Sunday night and dazzled Uxbridge by a 17 to 1 count. Eagles who have five play- ers in the top ten scores of the league to date, fattened their records, passing well with 22 assists awarded which is a good indication of the team work. The Uxbridge goaler Cordingley and Catherwood had a nightmare and must have been counting pucks in their sleep. Goal scorers were, Ted Puk-4, Don Spicher-3, AI Emard-3, Gary Cox-3, Steve Dunn-2, Rory Gibbs-1, Brian Simpson-1., The all important assists to Gibbs-4, Cox-4, Puk-3, Boyd Knox-3, Ron Strike-2, Gary Nemisz-1, Joe Humenich-1, Terry Sarginson-1, Spicher-1. Lenny Chappeil was in net for Bowmanville. The Hooper Trophy Centre's Three Stars of the game were lst star- Ted'Puk. 2nd star- Don Spicher. 3rd. star-Steve Dunn. This, years Junior C Port Darlington Marina & Hotel team is made up of a good blend of veterans,- second year men, and rookies the nucleus of a strong team for the future. Speaking of this year's team, they could go a long way in playoff action if they continue to show desire and the al important self discipline which some of the past Bowmanville teams have not had although they had excel- lent players. The team is reminded that Grey Cups are not won in August especially by Argos and StanleyCups by Leafs in September, but every game won before Christmas is on less to win after putting al the pressure away from your- self onto your opponent for a playoff spot. Engles travel to the bill town Thursday night meeting Port Hope Panthers for their third and final league game in the P.C.M.R. at 8:30 p.m. Over 100 local fans attended the last game there, cheering Eagles. Let's hope there are even more for this one. The alternative is Cobourg radio 1400 on the dial with the play by play action from Bob Spooner. Cobourg Cougars come to town next Sunday 7:30 p.m. and coach Vern McGregor and his Cougars would clearly lîke to break coach Bill Cosburn and his Eagles home record.
