Mandatory for Moped Drivers Wear -Helmets Acting upon recommenda- tions of the Select CommitteE on Highway Safety, Minister of Transportation and Com- munications James Snow to day announced a new regula- tion that makes it mandatory for ail drivers of mopeds (motor-assisted bicycles) to wear approved motorcycie helmets. The regulation is effective as of January 1, 1977. The Select Committee, which includes representa- tives of ail three Ontario politrical parties, requested that the amendmnent to The Hi ghway Traffic Act be brought intLo force with a viexw towards reducing deaths and head injuries among moped drivers. According to the Most recent MTC statistics, four mnoped drivers wer e killed and 203 injured on Ontario roads during the first nfine months of' 1976. The amnendmnent will caîl for moped drivers to wear ap- proved helmets which have been mandatory for motor- cycle drivers and their pas- sengers since 1970. They must meet the standards of the Canadian Standards Associa- tion, Snell Memorial Founda- tion, the British Standards Institute or the United States of Amerîca Federal Motor Safety Standard 218. AIl such helmets should carry the appropriate mono-, gram or certificate identifying them clearly as one of the four approved motorcycle helmets.
