'Critma G.-reetings Hotel Lake Road off Liberty st;s. 623-4925 Bowmanville ci travel trailer, tent campers, vetc.-are being seen on our highways. Their use basbeen growing rapidly with thous- ands of Canadian familles joining the fraternity of trailer enthusiasts every year. An estimated 200,000 trailer units of ail kinds and types are currently owned by Outario motorists aud that figure is growing at a rate of some 10 per cent annually. For many it is au enticing prospect: travelling, camp- ing, touring vacations without hotel and motel problems, an, inexpensive way of seeing the country with the entire family. No special driver's license is required-the regular driver's permit is ail that is necessary. The vehicle is ail that is necessary. The vehicle, con- sidered under the Highway Traffic Act as a separate unit, must be registered, but the fee is nominal. It would seem a simple Once the average motorist bas hitched up his new trailer, piled the family into the car and puiled out of the drive- way, it's a whole new bal game. That sixteen feet of trailer tagging behind chang- es driving techniques. Does the driver have the same passing abiiity on the free- way? Can he foilow and stop the same as he can when driving the car by itself ? What about backiug? Fish-tailing? Aud since recreational vehic- les are portable homes they contain the same variety of hazards to health and safety found in permanent homes- perhaps even more so, wben you consider the campactness and frequent motion of these vehicles. Reco gnizing the need for special instruction in this area, the Ontario Safety League bas developed a Rec- reational Vehicle Safety Course in co-operation wîth the Ontario Trucking Associa- tion, the Transportation Safe- ty Association,, the Travel Trailer Clubs Association of Ontario and the Canadian Recreational Vehicle Associa- tion who provided the funds to initiate the training program.- B.C. is the only other province which bas a similar type of course lu North America. But, O.S.L. is the first to make an attempt to compile informa- tion on those matters which, will contribute to safer opera- tion of recreational vehicles, both on and off the road. Thîrty senior members of the Travel Trailer Clubs Association for aIl over Ontar- io took the first Instructors Course at the Ontario Safety League's Toronto offices ou November 4. They, with graduates of subsequent courses, will form the nucleus of the training program, returning to their various clubs and communities quali- fied to offer the Course to the general public. The public course will include 24 hours of în-class and 8 hours of in-vehicle instruction. Course graduates will receive an unique certifi- cate suitable for framiug, together with a decal they can display on their trailer.
