The win was a team effort and goalies Troy Harmer and David Smith made some great saves to add to the Toro victory. Also in this game the Toros were missing two regular players. (Toros Beat Ajax 3-1) The second game of the day was played in Ajax. Two more Toros players were unable to attend, making the Toros short handed by 4 players. This forced coach AI Masters to convert goalie David Smith to a defenceman. Despite the handicap, Mary Browns No- vice Toros put together their best team effort of the year and defeated Ajax 3-1. The first period saw Ajax take the lead 1-0. This did not deflate the Toros but made them work even harder. In the second period, Bowmanville Toros hit the score sheet twice with both goals being scored by Mark Hickey unassisted. The Toros continued to fore- check and backcheck deligent- ly and the period ended with Toros leading 2-1. The third period saw Toros dig down even deeper and they found the energy to contin- ually check the Ajax boys at every opportunity. This re- sulted in Bowmanville adding their third goal in a goalmouth scramble. Credit for the goal was given to Mike Knight, the final score was 3-1. Sunday was a successful day for the Toros because of two supreme team efforts by the boys, Mike Houston, Shawn Rekker, Steve Piche, Shawn Martin, Mark Hickey, Paul Herron. Ian Wheelock, Jay Kelly, Jerry Winsor, Mike Knight, David Smith and Troy Harmer. Congratula- tions to Mark Hickey for scoring 5 of the Toros 7 goals. Toros Beat Peterborough On Sunday Jan. 9 the Toros travelled to Peterborough and defeated their hosts 1-0. The game had plenty of excite- ment and suspense. The only goal was scored in the first period with Toros Jerry Win- sor finding the target assisted by Shawn Rekker. Toros held a slight edge in play missing several good scoring chances including two breakaways by Jerry Winsor and close in tries by Mark Hickey and Jay Kelly. Credit for the win should go to the defence of Shawn Rekker, Shawn Martin, Steve Piche and Michael Houston and the goaltender Troy Harmer and David Smith. The goalies combined to stop three Peter- borough breakaways to pre- serve the shutout. Selects Blank Oshawa On Thursday, January 20th Mr. Submarine Selects travel- led to Donevan Sports Com- plex in Oshawa where they were hosted by Woodview Park in a return encounter and came away with a 5-0 win. Russ Hogg opened the scoring at the 10:35 mark of the first period on a solo effort. Hogg increased the count to 2-0 on a fine pass from Scott Irvin who was playing his first game with the Selects. Jeff Logan increased the score to 3-0 when he stole the puck off an Oshawa attacker and fired one high into the rigging. Danny Elliott and John Klompmaker combined to notch the fourth counter with Danny finally slipping the puck past a sprawling goal- tender. Scott Hillier closed out the scoring for the Sub crew after being set up by Logan. Randy Goudey and Scott O'Neil shared the shutout and- now have a combined G.A.A. of 1.70. In closing, I'd like to thank all the boys who attended as flower bearers at the funeral of Mr. Bob Beers, a man who will never be forgotton for the time and effort he spent in mnor hockey in this commun- ity. With 10 minutes being played between the Toros' next goal, they attempted to score more but the Bracebridge goalten- der foiled the Toros' plan, until Don Farrow fourid an opening for the puck on an excellent play while receiving a pass from Gary Dusseldorp. With about 2 min. remaining in the game the Bracebridge team "pulled" their goaltend- er to put on an extra attacker. The plan almost worked when Bracebridge scored on a scraible play in front of the Bowmanville net. The Toros effectively killed off the rest of the seconds remaining, win- ning the game and allowing them to proceed to the championship game. Britt Murphy tended the net this game and came up with many excellent consecutive saves to keep the Toros in the game. The Toros championship game was played against Capreol. The Toros changed their game attitude after the near upset they faced against Bracebridge. Here, the Toros cleanly outplayed theCapreol team, defeating them by a score of 7-1. Capreol opened the scoring in the first period after a slight defensive break-up, gîving them their short-lived lead. Brad Godfrey decided to score after accepting a pass from Dean Rutherford, as he waved his way around the Capreol detense and goaltender. Brad Godfrey also scored the next goal as he deflected a hard slapshot delivered by de- fenseman Ron Visser from the tight point position. Wayde Preston scored the final goal of the period shooting in the PLACES SEVENTH - On Sunday, 15-year- old Josh Haunsberger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Haunsberger of Courtice, pl'ced seventh out of 120 in a Canadian Free Style Competi- tion at Moonstone.
