Spencer's Major Midgets Oust Markham in Playoff Win Opener with Lindsay On Feb. 7, the Spencer Real Estate Major Midgets played their second game of the play-offs after winning their first at home. I was not long before the Toros assumed their lead as they scored the only 3 goals of the first period. Paul Reed started the game off happily as he gcored 2 goals in the first 5 minutes of play. His first goal was scored as he successfully completed some fine manoeuvers to beat the Markham defense and finally their goaltender. Wayde Preston received the only assist. Paul's second goal was the result of some hard work by Gary Dusseldorp and Dan Strike. Ron Visser was the next on the agenda to score as he released a slapshot from the point which entered the lower right hand corner of the Markham net. Assists were distributed between Ed Visser and Brad Godfrey. The second period opened with Markham scoring early to narrow the gap between the two teams. Brad Godfrey then became greedy and decided to score twice to give the Toros a dominating 5-1 lead. Returning after a short break between the second and third period, both teams scored two a piece with Markham's scoring done by Derrick Milne and Chris Malpin. Bowmanville's scor- ing was accomplished by Don Farrow, while assists went to Scott Stevens, Rick Bain and Pete Nemisz. On Feb. 9, the Bowmanville Major Midgets continued in playoff action in Hampton Arena against Markham. This was their third game of the best of 5 series. Markham opened the scor- ing midway through the first period to give them their brief lead. It was the Toros' Don Farrow who tied the game with about 1 minute remaining in the first period, while Scott Stevens received an assist on the play. After playing less than 1 minute into the second period, Brad Godfrey scored twice while Gary Dusseldorp re- ceived two assists in relation to the 2 goals. Within 50 seconds of Godfrey's goals, Dean Rutherford found him- self with the puck before the Markham goaltender and shot it into the net. Paul Reed and Wayde Preston received as- sists on the Rutherford's play. The rest of the period ticked away and both teams retired to their dressing rooms for a short break. Returning to the ice to play the final period of the game, at this point the Toros were in the lead by a score of 4-1. Markham narrowed the gap by 2 when they scored on a passing play. Dean Ruther- ford scored his second goal as he deflected a shot from Paul Reed high over the Markham goalie. Brad Godfrey decided to score once more to com- plete his hat trick and lengthen the Toros' lead. Godfrey scored this goal from the slot position as he was set up by Gary Dusseldorp after he worked the puck out of the corner and in front of the net. Wayde Preston also received as assist on the play. The Toros winning this game, their third of the series, eliminated Markham from the play-offs. After eliminating Markham in 3 straight games the Toros encountered Lindsay in the play-off finals. The game was played at home in Bowman- ville Arena, as the fans watched the Toros skate to a 6-2 victory. Gary Dusseldorp took 10 seconds to open the scoring as the puck was shot in the corner and he carried it out, lifting the puck high on the back hand to score. Assists were given to Ed Visser and Brad Godfrey. The Toros' next goal was not scored until the end of the first period, while the score sheet was not changed by Lindsay during this period. The second period was slightly different, although the caliber of hockey was not very good. Here, Lindsay scored one of their pair along with a Toro goal by Brad Godfrey, whose wrist shot from the slot area slipped into the lower left hand corner of the Lindsay net. Between the second and third period, both teams returned to their dressing room for a short duration and then returned to the ice to give their third period effort. The Toros then proceeded to score 3 more goals only to be disturbed by Lindsay in the last minute of play as the Lindsay player had a "break- a-way" and scored. The Toros' goals were scored by Paul Reed as he was lef t fo put the puck in the open net after Dean Rutherford executed a fine play to give Reed the puck. Brad Godfrey scored the next with assists goint to Ed Visser and Peter Nemisz. Ed Visser also scored the final goal, a loose puck into the open net, with assists to Brad Godfrey and Dan Strike.
