Bowmanville, February 16, 1977 7 St. Marys Juveniles Beaten by Weston in Silver Stick Tourney Marino Eagles Down Port Perry in First Playoff Game Bowmanville. Good defensive plays and superb goal tending saved the gane for Bowmanville as Markham played well throughout the game. Bow- ma ville also missed some good scoring chances. The fourth game, played at Markham on Sunday, Feb. 13, Bowmanville won by a 5-3 score. The goal scorers in this game were Leddy with 3 and Scot with 2. Cryderman had 2 assists, Starkey and Scott had singles. Bowmanville now advance to the next round which will be against Lindsay. In their first game of the Silver Stick Tournament played at Mooretown on Saturday, Feb. 5th, St. Marys Cement Juveniles went down to defeat to Weston by a 5-2 score in a division "A" game. Weston had a very strong team and defeated Toronto Lido 6-0 and Aurora 7-2 to advance to the Championship game. Bowmanville put up a strong fight and the result of the contest was in doubt until the final seconds. Weston scored first in the opening period but Bowman- ville came back just a minute later with two quick goals and held the lead at the end of the first. At 5:20 of the period, Ralph Cryderman . scored from "Duke" Brunt. Twenty- five seconds later, Steve Hogarth, assisted by Gerry Leddy, was the marksman on the second goal. Weston tied the game in the second period. In the third at 6:20, Weston took the lead for the second time of the game. Bowmanville's efforts to tie the game failed and with just 10 seconds left in the game, Weston scored into the empty net. From the face off following the goal, they scored another before the period ended on a hard blast from inside the blue line. Bowmanville had opportun- ities in the second period to move well ahead in the scoring as Weston played two men short several times. But their excellent defensive plays and strong goaltending kept them in the game. Although Bowmanville was not victorious, they should be proud of their efforts against a powerful, well balanced hockey club. Delta Faucet Midgets Win Consolation Trophy In Bobcaygeon Tourney IDA Bantams Win First Round McGregor IDA Bantams eiiminated Stouffville from the OMHA playoffs two games to none with one game tied. On Jan. 29th in Darlington Arena, the IDA Toros won the first game by a 6-4 count. Bowmanville built up a 4-0 lead by the halfway mark when Stouffville roared back but could not pull even with the determined Toros. Garth McQuaid led the attack with two goals and two assists including the winning goal in the third period. Garth had an excellent all-round game. Brian Canfield had a goal and two assists while Jeff Sallows had one goal and an assist, giving this line a total of nine points. Andy Paton and Len Dyck were the other Toros' marksmen with as- sists going to Tony Cliff, Grant Brock and Randy Lake with 2. When the McGregor club travelled to Stouffville on Feb. 3rd they came away with a 7-7 tie in a game which turned out to be goalies' nightmare as it was played wide open. The Toros fell behind 4-2 early in the second but managed to tie it at 4 all by the end of the second, thanks to a major penalty to the Stouffville club. Both teams took turns at scoring in the third and Stoufiville finally tied it up with just 31 seconds left while their goalie was on the bench for the extra attacker. Brian Canfield scored for the Toros and picked up an assist. Jeff Sallows, Andy Paton and Kevin Tink each had a goal and an assist. Single markers went to Dennis Simpson and Steve Huisman. Garth McQuaid continued to pick up points with two assists while Tony Clieff and Dale Broome had one assist each. Back at Darlington arena on Feb. 5th, both teams tightened up considerably with the end result being a close 3-2 decision for the Drugstore crew. Stouffville held a 1-0 lead at the end of the first period but Kevin Tink tied it in the second with assists to Dennis Simpson and Andy Paton. Big AI Turney was having an excellent game on defence until he ran into a major penalty and as a result a game misconduct. Stouffville again took the lead and the second period ended 2-1 Stouffville. The IDA boys came oit flying in the third and Dennis Simpson scored on a sizzler from the point assisted by Steve Huisman. Then, through some persistance and hard work and great skating by Jeff Sallows, the McGregor club scored the winner with Brian Canfield flashing the red light. Both Garth McQuaid and Jeff Sallows worked to set it up. After a shaky start, goalie Mark Doyle settled down to make some real good saves especially in the middle frame when the Toros played short- handed for 7 minutes straight. Buzzsaw Kevin Tink never stopped working from the first whistle to the last. Allen Potter continued his solid hitting along the blueline. Toros now meet Markham in the next round of playoffs. Eagles started the game at a very fast pace scoring at the 1:06 mark of the first period but lost their momentum due to a long stoppage in play because of a timer failure. Eagles found their timing in the second after a three week layoff and hammered home three goals then coasted to the win in the third period. Lenny Chappell in net played a steady game coming up with some fine glove saves. Eagles lack of good sound body contest in this game was one of their weak points, electirig to check too often with the crosscheck. Rory Gibbs, leading scorer of the team, 'started the Eagles on the scoring track at the 1:06 mark of the first, rapping in a rebound assisted by Boyd Knox and captain Joe Humenick for the only first period goal. Brian Simpson scored in the second period fromlthe point a shorthanded goal after some excellent forechecking by Rory Gibbs with AI Emard also assisting. St. Marys Cement Juveniles Oust Markham in 4 Games In the first game of the O.M.H.A. Juvenile playoffs, St. Marys Cement Juveniles came up a little flat against a fired up Markham team and lost the opening contest on home ice by a score of 3-1. Bowmanville opened the scoring in the second when Ed Gruyters, who was standing in front of the net, slammed home a pass from Ralph Cryderman. Markham scored early in the third (1:40) to tie the game. They took the lead at 11:33 and with 25 seconds remaining scored in the empty net for the clincher. The second game played at Markham on Monday, Feb. 7, turned out to be a different story. Bowmanville played a strong second half and came out on top of a 521 score. Rick Scott, unassisted, scored at the 56 second mark of the opening period. From this point on to well into the second period, Bowmanville were showing the effects of their trip to the Silver Stick Tournament and appeared to be struggling somewhat. How- ever, Markham didn't look any better. Bowmanville finally found their legs and scored two late second period goals to take a commanding 3-0 lead into the third. Cryder- man scored at 12:42 assisted by Rick Mackey. At 14:49, Mark Lavigne, in on a breakaway, beat the goalie for the third goal of the game. Jim Hutton set up the play. The first game was played against Beeton and the Toro team came out very flat and as a result were shut out by a scor= of 3 to 0. Complete disorganization and lacklustre play combined to produce the team's worst effort of the season. The second game played was , against Minden who provided little competition for the newly inspired Toros. A five goal outburst early in the opening period pretty well destroyed the opposition. Two goals in the second period and one in the third sealed the outcome. Unfortunately, Min- den did manage to score with less than a minute left in the game and thus rob Paul Lavigne of a well deserved shutout. It was the second time in as many games that Paul has lost a shutout bid by only a few seconds.
