The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, February 23, 1977 i D&R Sports Minor Atoms Lose Heartbreaker >By Basil Clieff The Bowmanville D&R Sports Minor Atom Toros travelled to London to take part in the Invitational Tourn- ament and lost in the Cham- ionship final in the second overtime period. In Bowmanville's first game of the day, they defeated Hespeler by the score of 5-2. The Toros were a littie shaky in the early stages of the game but managed to score at the 5:28 mark with Jon Clieff the marksman. Hespeler struck for two goals to take the lead n the middle period. Acting VemCaptain for Bowman- ville, Pierre St. Amand, tied the ,score with an unassisted tally at the 2:58 mark. The third period was al Bowmanville as they scored three times. Chris Dreossi scored the winner taking a pass from Brent Neill and Tom McLaughlin. Clieff struck for bis second goal after cleanly beating a Hes- peler defender. St. Amand scored an unassîsted marker to put the game out of reach. Pierre St. Amand, played on of bis finest games with his two goal' 1Jffort and superb backchecking. In goal for the Toros was Allan Ulrich who stopped Hespeler flat in the third period. In their second game of the tournament, Bowmanville squared off against Woolwich and defeated them 'by a convincing score of 4-0. The D&R squad took command of the -game at the first drop of the puck. Brian Heard opened the scoring at the 8:10, mark with a high drive that few spectators saw and three minutes later ,scored again, this time from the centreman Brad Bamsey and. winger Brett lundell. In the second period, the Toro's goaltender Richard Smith held Woolwich at bay and stopped a three on, one situation which left them frustrated. Also in the period, Greg Watson made a beautiful rush through two defencemen and scored unassisted. Late in the second, Jeff Dawson scored on a great setup by Winger Jon Clief f and Greg Watson making the final score 4-0. The Toros' goaltender Richard Smith completely dominated the threat breaking 'rsshutout and was outstand- The stage was set for the Chamnpionship final- between Bowmanville and London. The Toros opened the game's scoring witb Brian Heard scoring after being set up by Greg Watson. London tied the score near the end of the period. In the second, the Toros weat ahead again, this time on a goal by Brett Blundell assisted by defenceman Pierre St. Amand. London scored in the final period to tie the score and force the teams into overtime. The home club evenitually won the championship ia the second overtime period with orply 17 seconds remaining. Alan Ulrich was outstanding in the Bowmanville net and al the lads- played extremely well. The Toros were without the services of their outstand- ing Captain Lorne Whitmarsh and Tom MeLaughlin was unable to play in the final game because of illness. The Toros were assessed a number of questionable penalties that vastly reduced their effective- ness.
