Hollingshead founded, his saddle soap company in Camdicen, New Jersey, back in 1888, he invested five dollars worth of capital in the venture. By contrast, in 1976, the Canadian branch of the corp- oration here in Bowmanville is paying ouf over fhree-quar- fers of a million dollars in salaries f0 local employees and fthe total is expected to rise to over a million dollars next year. n the beginning, saddle soap was only the start of the Hollingshead story. Later on, the need for new producfs was present, and the manufactur- ing facilifies expanded f0 produce metal polishes and axle grease. As the livery trade expand- ed, Mr. Hollingshead contin- ued to prosper. He developed a national wholesale disbribu- resident and General and Classic Car Wax lion systeni which resulted in the growth of his manufactur- ingfacilities. When automobiles came into vogue^ in the early part of the twenfieth century, Mr. Hollingshead immediately took advanfage of the greafer opportunify if presented, and this led fo the company's present involvement in the automotive affer-market. In March, 1974, R.M. Hol- lingshead became a wholly owned subsidiary of Classic Chemical, a merger which is described as the -marriage 0f a highly efficient manufactur- ing company f0 the leader in the market of a sales comp- any." This merger was s0 complimrenfary f0 both comp- anies that fhey have now obfained a stafus of being the largest chemical specialfy manufacturer in fhe world today. The company's corporafe sales are distributed ta 111 countries from manufacturing facilities in nf ie, cities throughout North America. The Bowmanville operation handles the entire distribution and manufacture of the com- plete product line for Canada. The Bowmanville subsid- iary manufactures and markets a complete line of automotive and service chemnical products at their plant on Wellington Street. The company has the most, complete product line in thie trade today and contains almost every automotive chemnical known to have a bona fide trade demand. in addition to Hollîngs- head's automiotive products, the Bowmanville plant manu- factures a large line of industrial and household items such as floor wax, germicides, insecticides and cleaning agents for companies such as Lestoil, the Canadian Armed Forces and ShelI, Gulf and Texaco 011 companies. Hollingshead is comprised of several divisions. The marketing sector con- sists of Classic Car Wax Products of Canada, which is a rlarketing company owned by R.M. Hollingshead, Cana- da, and selîs Classic and Whiz products. This division em-, ploys several salaried person- nel in the Bowmanville plant and has a sales force of 20 people f rom Halifax to Van- couver Island. Another division within Hol- lingshead is Perry and Mara- thon Filters, which handles the production and distribu- tion of automotîve, truck and dry cleaning filters. Two Hollingshead salesmen are presently marketing, these products for the company- across Canada and this part of the business is one of the most successful divisions in the company. The Rustop sector manu- façtures a rustproofing agent and also selis the pumps and related supplies and parts which are necessary to set up a rustproofing business.- Donald Meredith heads up the private brands division of Hollingshead in Bowmanville, and the products are sold to various companies such as Noxema and the previously mentioned oil companies. As far as the production division of Hollingshead iÉ concerned there have been several changes in the past 50 years since the plant opened. n 1926,' the plant, starfed with a total of 30,000 square feet of space. Since that time, Holingshead has added a new warehouse, new office facilit- ies and improved their ship- ping and receiving docks. In terms of equipment, the company has insta lIed a great deal of new machinery includ- ing .two 'high speed rotary filling mies, stainless steel mixing tanks and various small filling andcappingunits. The Wellington Street facil- ity operates out of four floors,, and produces 300 separate product mies for 30 different companies, nof including Classic and Whiz products. Holl'.ingshead's storage units are capable of holding 163,000 gallons of liquid in 14 field tanks. From these tanks, base chemicals are pumped f0 the mîxing floor where other raw materials are combined to make specific formulations. Quality control is another important sector of the comp- any. Hollingshead employs fhree chemisfs in its labora- tory ta oversee this division and confribute to the research and developmenf of new products, fhough 40 chemisfs at the laboratory in Camden, New Jersey, do the majority 0f product development.
