4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, March 23, 1977 Dear'Editor: Town of Newcastle Rate- payers Association will hold a special meeting on April 6th 1977,at 8 p.m. in the council chambers above the firehali, Church Street Bowmanville. Ont. n order to give ail those who are concerned about the proposed Nuclear Power Plant in the former Township of Darlington an opportunity to bring their concern to the public, and discuss ways and means to have a fuît public enquiry into ail aspects con- nected with such a Nuclear Powerplant T.O.N.R.A. is very much concerned with couni's de- cision to rescind an earlier 1974 resolution, in which council resolved to dernand such a public hearing, before taking any action towards the establishment of a Nulear Power Plant, and repiacing that resolution with one, that gives full support to Ontario Hydro's Nulear Power Plant proposais without such hear- ing. t shouid be noted that this decision is against ail known intentions by council prior to March 17, 1977. The 1974 resolution was pubiciy sup- ported by'ail candidates, we have to hear yet for what valid reason they now feel that such an environmentai hearing is not necessary. If council lias the answer to al'the questions of Nulear waste, and of what to do with the Nulear Power plant when its usefuiness has corne to an end In but 30 to 50 years, ratepayers have a rightto be told. Why shouid we seli the birthright of future genera- tions for a few miles of roads and sewer lines to serve Hydro? The ratepayers association is not against an eiectric generating station, it wei- cornes whoiesome develop- ment, which will be beneficiai to our town, but there have neyer been any satisfactory answers as to wliat the scientists hope to do with Nuclear waste, nor have they given any other solution for an obsolete Nuclear power plant tlian cementing it in, and let it stwith ail its inherent dangers for generations to corne. Neither can they guarantee that 'no major disaster wiii liappen due to accident or, crime. These possîbilities are, perhaps very srnall, but their effect will be out of al proportion to the benefits we will reap wlien ail goes weli. Citizens have a riglit to a f ull envîronmental hearing, this Nuclear Power Plant is no matter for Counceil to approve behind ciosed doors. Wednesday, April 6th at 8 P. . D. Brinkrnan OBITUARY C.
