8 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, April 6, 1977 Section Two Qntario Regrnent Will Again HoId Summer Training Plan For Students Starting July 4 Lieutenant Colonel M.J. Koster Commanding Officer of The Ontario Regiment, Oshawa, announced today that the Regiment would again be conducting its pop- ular Summer Student Train- ing Program for young men and women starting on the 4th of July, 1977. The Summer Student pro- gram, which was pioneered by the Regiment in 1955, will be open to young men and women ages 17 to 35, who are in good health and willing to join the Regiment to undergo nine weeks of extensive military training subjects. Training will be done at the Regiment's Headquarters in Oshawa, at Canadian Forces Base Bor- den, north of Toronto, and at other Canadian Forces Bases in Toronto. "We have now had the go-ahead to start recruiting for the 1977 Summer Student Program", said Colonel Koster. "I hope to have 40 enrolled for the first-year program by the first week of May, because this program has proven very popular amongst the young people of Oshawa and district ever since we started in 1955. Many of the young men who were graduates of the course have decided upon full-time careers with the Armed Forces. Many others are now officers and Non-Commissioned Officers in our Regiment, and other Regiments and forniations of the Reserves. Even if a young man or woman never goes any further in the forces, we feel and they agree, that the training they receive for the nine-week period teaches them to do things that they would never learn anywhere else," said Colonel Koster. Colonel Koster said that the training standards of the progran are very tough and demanding, with a high emphasis on physical fitness, mental output and the devel- opment of individual initia- tive. "There's no use kidding anyone who may think that they want to join, that we're ready to handle sissies or crybabies. We expect a lot, and in return for the best individual performance, a person can put out, we can provide rewarding, well paid and challenging summer ex- perience." Colonel Koster went on to say that very few candidates drop out once they get into the routine of the Regiment's summer program. "Our Summer Course members- both men and women-soon develop a tremendous team spirit which keeps them to- gether throughout the entire training period. Many have stayed in the Regiment and have served overseas, on attachment with the Regular Forces, said Colonel Koster. Colonel Koster said that applicants who wish a place on the Summer Course should apply at the Armoury now, and that a news release describing the prograin is being sent to High School Patrick G. Deegan D.T. DENTURE THERAPY CLINIC formerly known as BOWMANVILLE DENTURE CLINIC has moved to a new location 36 KING ST. W. BOWMANVILLE 623-4473 guidance teachers in Oshawa, Whitby, Port Perry, Ux- bridge, Pickering, Bowman- ville. He urged that interested people should enroll as soon as possible, as vacancies are very limited, and so that a place could be guaranteed. Enrolment now can also allow course members to undergo some preliminary training that would place them in a higher training category once the course got underway in July, allowing the member to progress at a faster rate. Candidates will receive ap- proximately $1,150 for nine weeks training, less income taxes if applicable. The nine weeks training will consist of drill and weapons training, first aid and map reading, combat survival in the field, which involves living out under bivouac conditions, armoured reconnaissance battle drills, and sub-machine guns. In addition, thére will be daily sports which will involve track and field and swimming. . Highlight of the nine weeks training program will be the 1977 field concentration of Toronto area reservists at Canadian Forces Bases. During this two week period, the Ontario Regiment candid- ates will join the other members of the unit for a week's armoured training. The Summer Students will be fully integrated with the armoured crews of the On- tario Regiment, at Canadian Forces Base Borden and at the Armoured Fighting vehicle Ranges at Meaford north of Collingwood. Colonel Koster also sala that all clothing and equipment as well as meals while under- going field training, are pro- vided free of charge. Full details of the entire program can be obtained by individuals applying in person at the Ontario Regiment Armoury, 53 Simcoe Street North, Oshawa, any Tuesday or Thursday evening between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Colonel Koster again stressed that early application would en- sure a place on this popular program, and that preference would be given to applicants who showed a desire to continue on with the Ontario Regiment in the fall.
