10 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, April 6, 1977 Section Two Driving Tips For Saving Costly Gos Cars are available in al sizes-small, medium, and ful size: Regardless of size, drivers can improve their gasoline mileage. Here are some gas saving tips from General Motors of Canada Limited. Gasoline can be conserved, along with prolonging of engine and tire life, by avoiding unnecessarily rapid acceleration. Avoid frequent stops and starts. Take advantage of through streets to avoid traffic lights, and stop signs. Pace your driving to avoid unneces- sary stops., Hligh speeds1 substantially increase gasoline consump- tion. Driving at 50 MPH versus 70 MPH can resuit in a fuel saving of about 20 per cent. An idllng engine uses gaso- line. Faced with a wait of more than a few minutes, it is better to turn off the engine and later restart it. Do not carry your golf clubs or tools needlessly. Even 100 pounds of excess weight egins to affect gasoline mileage. Every "pump" of the pedal means extra gasoline going through the carburetor. It is a bad habit to pump the accelerator after starting the engîne or while waiting for a traffic light to change. Overail tuning can measur- ably improve a car's perform- ance. Under inflation of tires not only causes needless wear but can also waste gasoline. Tire pressures should be checked regularly.
