Canadian Club Speaker -re canàdian Club of West Durham will meet at 8:00 p.m. on F'riday, April 29, 1977 in Trinity-United Cburch Hall. The speaker will be R. Gordon Moyles, Ph. D. Dr. Moyles' keen enthus- iasm for Newfoundland is a resuit of his fondness for the attachment to, the island of his bîrth. He bas sînce migrated to Edmonton where be is Associate Chairman of the Englisb Department at the University and teaches Canadian Literature with special empbasîs on nine- teentb century lterature of travel and exploration. R. Gordon Moyles ko In 1975 his first booko Newfoundland was publisbed, entitled "Complaints Is Many and Various, But The Odd Divil Seem To Like ILt." He got the idea for it whiie working on his Ph. D. thesis (on Milton) and, finding the stress of research could flot be eased by a good day's fishing, he relaxed by reading ail the literature on Newfoundland in the British Museum. In his book, Dr. Moyles presents a view of Newfotindland and Newfoundlanders, as seen through the eyes of its first genuine tourists-the -journal- ists, missionaries, historians, adventurers and loyers of the primitive, who visited there in the nineteenth century. His talk is based on these writings and it is a story that is somnething bizarre, often humorous and always absorb- ing. In a review of his book, Anne Roche writes, "It is very skilfully done and the best sort of introduction to Newfound- land history virgin territory for most Canadians. "Comf- plaints..." is great fun to read and it underlines their rather special characteristic-an enormous zest for. life that Newfoundlanders have pre- served in the face of material hardship." Dr. Moyles is married, and has three cbildren. Mre bas, in addition to "Complaints .... published two other books,1 "Canadian Literature to 1900" and "English Canadian Liter- ature: A Student Guide." He is currently at work on an officiai history of the Salva- tion Army in Canada. He dlaims to be "primarily inter- ested in literary research and trout fisbing, in reverse order of preference." Topic: "Newfoundland: Home of Bogs, Dogs and Fogs!1" The regular meeting will be preceded by the Annual Meet- ing.. Enjoy Gracious Living in this spacious triple brick two storey century home.
