Cummingis.Majlor Bantams Win Oshawa Tourn ey Action Galore During'Opening Games of Ontario Junior C'Finals Here The first two games of the best of seven Ontario finals between Essex and the Port Darlington and Marina Jr. C Eagles on Saturday and Sunday at Bowmanville Arena brought plenty of action for fans. In the top picture, a donnybrook developed during the first game on Saturday night, involving quite a few players. One local fan became Givs sse Fîrst Wîn[% Over Eagles onl Saturd By Don Wilcox, The Bowmanville Port Darlington Marina and Hotel Junior C's are right in the thick of the battle for the provincial title with the Essex 73's and after two very exciting games in Bowman- ville Saturday night 'and Sunday afternoon the only disappointment is the attend- ance with only 900 fans on hand for each game. The calibre of hockey exhib- ited by the Eagles is truly deserving of sellout crowds but it would appear there is more interest in Lindsay and Port Hope, Cobourg areas as the games were broadcast back to the respective hockey hotbeds where sellout crowds would be a certaintly if any of those three towns had their teams in the ahl Ontario finals. Essex 73's are an excellent skating team with good size. Essex path to the finals was a lot shorter than Eagles with the home ice advantage elim- inated Dresden 4 games to 3, Blenheim 4 games to 3 then Listowel 4 straight. If there is one area that Eagles might hold an edge it could be in experience as Essex have four midget, age players including one minor midget. Essex either had scouted Eagle (losely or were tipped off when they arrived as to Wh() Eagles key players wcre. Humenick missing on the blueline put added pressure on Eagles defence and was a factor in Essex 4 to 3 overtime win Saturday night. Eagles' Rory Gibbs started the scoring at 18: 46 of the first period on a power play,' shooting low along the ice after a passout from Boyd Knox with Terry Sarginson also assisting on the only first period goal. Essex went ahead with two second period goals, first at the 7:45 mark on a power play, Mark McGuire from Don, Chittie and Randy Pritchard then at 9:23 Mike Heaume from Bob Chevelier and Graham Robinson. Eagles tying goal came from Jerry Johnson at the 15:33 mark after receiving a back pass from Rory Gibbs, beating Bob Chittie again along the ice. Brian Simpson gave Eagles the go ahead goal 3:14 into the third period faking the shot then picking the lower right corner with R-ory Gibbs assist- ing putting him in on ail three goals. Ross Geiger tied the score for the 73's on a long drive At the 8:27 mark assis ted by Ed Chevelier. Eagle Gary Cox and Rory Gibbs had excellent game winning goal opportunities but were beaten by bot, Bob Chittle. Essex game winning goal came 3:34 into the second period of sudden death over- time and can bc described as upset and went onto the ice to see if, he could help. He was led away by a local official. In the lower picture, Lenny Chappeli in the Bowmanville net makes a great stop on a shot that was labelled for a sure goal.
