6 The Canadian Statesman, Bom nvlMa11 1977 Section Two Forecast Expatnsibon At Orono 's Works Depot The Durham Region plans to expand its Orono works depot next year., In a five year capital fbrecast approved by the Durham Regional council last week, expansion of the depot is slated for 1978. The cost of the project is estimated at $110,000 and the region's works department is planning to build additional office space at the facilities on regional road four. In addition, the region plans to build an extra garage bay, and a wash bay. Cost Increases Forcast by Hydro Ontario Hydro 'recently announced a proposed rate increase in the wholesale cost of electricity for 1978 averag- ing 11.3 per cent to the 352 municipal utility systems and about 12 per cent to 100 large industrial customers. The proposed change would be effective January 1, 1978. On reference from the Minister of Energy to the Ontario Energy Board, the rate proposal will be reviewed in public hearings in accord- ance with provisions of the Energy Board Act. In a letter to the Minister of Energy, Chairman Robert Taylor said the increase wîll be necessary -eight months from now to cope with forecast higher costs of supplying electricity next year. The increase in wholesale rates will result in a majority of municipal utilities increas- îing retail rates during 1978. The amount will vary from utility to utility and will also depend upon increases in their other costs, as well as the anti-inflation program cri- teria. "On the average, taking into consideration the increase in the wholesale rate AND ASSUMING EQIJIVALENT INCREASES IN LOCAL UTILITY COSTS, a municipal residential customer without electric heating and using 750 kilowatthours a month can expect to see his monthly bill increase by approximately $230,"l the Hydro Chairman said. "That works out to about 8 cents a day." For a residential customer using electricity for nîl pur- poses, including heating, with an annual consumption of 30,000 kilowatthours, _the increase would be in the order of $74 a year. MVr. Taylor said the pro- posed increase meets the criteria established by the provincial governrnent to ensure compliance by Ontario Hydro with the spirit and intent of the national anti-in- flation program.
