8 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanviile, May 11, 1977 Section Two ShriesHove FuninGreot Par e tOshaw Hundreds of Shriners were in Oshawa from Thursday to Sunday for the annual Jamboree of the Association of New York and Ontario Shrine Oriental bands. On Saturday afternoon, they staged a parade complete with marching bands, motorcycles, go-karts and even canoes powered by mini-bikes. The participants were costumed in fitting attire to complement their floats, much to the enjoyment of the large crowds that lined the -streets. Above are some of the Shriners with their unusual, colorful oufits. The Oshawa Shrine Club hosted the event. The only Bowmanville Shriner recognized by the Statesman photographer was Harold 'Fibber' MeGee who was driving the President of Oshawa 'Shrine in a convertible. The Jamboree concluded Sunday morning with representatives of1 14 Shrine clubs returning to their homes in' Ontario and New York State after a busy but enjoyable three days. The Shrine supports 22 hospitals'. Letter's to the Editor Biackstock, Ontario May 5, 1977 Clean Up1 Day at School Dear Mr. James; On May 23, fromn 10:00 a.m. to approximately 4: 00 p.m. the Durham County Junior Farm- ers will be holding their second Clean-Up day at the Base Line School. We are cieaning up this school as a Community Betterment Pro- ject. We use the schooi quite often for functions such as Square Dancing, and Parties and this is our way of making payment for the use of the building. We spent April il doing such things as washing windows, and walls and scrubbing the floor. On May 23 we wiil be hanging new curtains, scru- bing the ceiling, repairing the roof, cieaning up the grounds and possîbly painting waiis, and ceiiing, and'putting a coat of varathane on the floor. We are able to proceed with these plans because of a competition which we won at the Junior Farmer Provincial Conference in , Toronto;,. in March, for the best proposed Community Betterment Pro- ject. I thought that-you mîght be interested in sending a photo- grapher and-or a reporter out on May 23, as this is an event which is of community inter- est. If you desire more informa- tion feel free to contact me, 986-5109, or our President, Brenda Metcalfe, 623-5001. Yýours Enthusiastîcaily, John Larmer Provincial Director Durham County Junior Farmers Editor's note: We'Il do our best to be there to record the event. May 3, 1977 General Delivery Dear Editor; Ecology or Economy? it should be pointed out to Mr. Wm. Davis that flot only The NDP Party and its adherents, but most thought- fui constituents of The Con- servative and Liberal Parties, wouid like to be assured of a dlean, safe world to lêve in, for themselves and their descend- ants. The proliferation of nuclear expansion, one of the major concerns, of everyone, bas not yet been so much as mention-, ed in talks concerning the coming election! It had better be mentioned soon and stren- uously. The "red herrings" being drawn to the attention of the public are not taking people's minds from this issue. Nulear expansion is a matter of major concern, not only to thousands who band together in citizens groups in Ontario, but in Canada and the whole world. Huge quantities of this very same material were dumped in the Port Granby nuclear dump from 194 until the present. Mr. Galloway died from living too close to this material but how many citi- zens have to die in the Port Granby, Newcastle; Hope Township area before we realize that building a nuclear refinery and dump in Port Granby is foolish, dangerous and downrigh t lethial? Let's wake Up and stop the expansion of nuclear waste and nuclear facilities before it is too late for ail of us. E.
