4The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, August 3, 1977 Horry Van Bealle Roses a Favorite any time Today you can enjoy roses ail year, first from your garden and the rest of the year from your local florist. A lot has been written about roses, how to care for them, and how 4o enjoy them in the house. When you e ut roses fromn the garden, choose the blooms that are tightly in bud or slightly open, these will last the longest in the house. The best tiîne to eut them is in the evening, take only as much stem as you need, since the plant can use ail the leaves and stem, to reproduce new flowers and to keep the plant healthy. It is a good idea to carry a pail of water with you, s0 you ana place the cut roses in the water right away. Use a sharp knife'or a sharp pair of clippers and eut the rose on an angle, always make sure that some leaves are left on the stem after cutting. Remnove the thorns and foliage that will be below the water level in your vase, this will keep the water fresher,, and will have no smell. The 'easy way to remove the foliage is to take several layers of paper towels or loth and wrap they around the stem, and pull downward to the end of the stem, stripping away leaves and thoras as you pull. Neyer serape mec stem wth a knîl e, the resulting injury will short- en the life of the rose. If the rose has only a few leaves and thorns, just break them off with your fingers. Give the rose a fresh eut at least 12 inch above the end of the stem, eut ýwith a sharp knîfe at a sharp angle in order to expose as mueh eut surface to the water as possible. Immerse the stems in deep water that is too bot for your hand, 90 degrees, Ieave the roses alone until the water cools, then place the container in the refrigerator or a cool place for a couple of hours to condition the blooms, this can also be done with the roses that have wilted, gîve them a new eut and follow the same procedure. When you are ready to arrange the roses, fili the vase with fresh water, and add a produet caîl flora life orchrysal, which will give the roses a feeding and will give them at least 'an extra 3 to 4 days in the house, follow the instructions of the produet, since too much will stun or shock the bloom. Arrange themi any way you like, and give each of the stem another '/4 nech eut before you place thern mr the vase. Keep themn in a cool place as much as possible and add fresh water everyr day or better yet replace the water each day andeut the stem each time. To make it easier to place the roses in the vase, you can use oasis or floral foam, which can be bought from your local florist, and can be inserted la the vase and then the roses can be placed your liking. Most of the arrangement will be enhanced with a lttle green, try the tops of the asparagus plants, to give the dainty look, or eut a few branches of the mock orange shrubs in your garden and mix themi- with the arrangement. This is the time of the year to give your roses an extra shot lan the arm by addiag a soluble fertilizer such as 2-0 20-, this will help to produ).îce some new foliage, and sustain the rose bush through "Île dry hot summer, this can be applied with a wateriag caa or with a sprayer, applying this in the evening or early morning to prevent suabura on the leaves. Keep up the spraying every two weeks, to keep down the funi and keep Water's water, whethèr it's distant beach or a backyard pool. Small children should neyer use a home or apart- ment building pooî, except when supervised by an adult.
